Case Study – SPARX plc
SPARX plc is a fairly large electrical goods manufacturer. It has 30 sites of various sizes spread across Great Britain and is considering expanding abroad.

The Company is divided into four Regions – Southern England, Northern England, Scotland and Wales. Each Region has a Regional Manager who reports to the Operations Director.

Each site has its own Site Manager. The Site Managers report to the relevant Regional Managers. Each site is organised into departments; there are certain departments which are found at all sites, but some departments are only found at the larger sites (for example Research). Each department has a manager and staff whom they manage.

Finance, Human Resources & Payroll, and Marketing are based at the Leeds Head Office,

The company already has computerised finance, sales and stock-control systems. Now the Board wishes to look into the possibility of investing in Information Systems to aid decision-making.

It has been decided to ask a group of trainee managers to investigate this further. This would be valuable experience for the trainees and useful for the company.

Assignment
Work together in groups of 3 – 4 students. You should inform your tutor in writing of your coursework group members, as well as submitting group members via WebLearn. You may not subsequently change group without the agreement of your tutor or module leader.

Each member of the group should take the role of a trainee manager in the company. Each person should take on a particular role – (e.g. trainee Site Manager, trainee Distribution Manager, trainee Production Manager, trainee IT Manager, etc); agree the roles between the members of the group.

You may make any reasonable assumptions where the information is not available in the Case Study – but should not extend the scope of the system. You should note any assumptions you have made.

Consider the Case Study and carry out the following tasks.

All members of the group are responsible for every page of the group part of the report.

Any assumptions made must be clearly stated.

1. List each team member’s details: name, student ID, trainee manager role in the company for the coursework. (3 marks)
2. Draw a hierarchy diagram for the staff in the organisation, including all the trainee managers in the team. (8 marks)
