There are 353 species in Canada that have been designated ?at risk? in some way as of May,
2000. This number constantly changes as species are added to this list, go extinct or are no
longer deemed at risk and removed from the list. Within the list, there are several different
categories of risk: special concern, threatened, endangered, extirpated (no longer found in
Canada but not extinct), and extinct. Which species in Canada are considered to be at risk is
determined by an organization called COSEWIC. Throughout this course you will learn why
and how certain species become threatened and ultimately endangered. For this
assignment, you have the opportunity to learn more about a specific endangered species
from Canada.
Assignment Objectives:
(1) Determine the reasons why/how a species has become endangered in Canada; and
(2) Describe conservation strategies required to protect the species from extirpation or
extinction.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE YOU START THIS ASSIGNMENT:
*You will be ASSIGNED a specific endangered species to report on.
*The name of an endangered species will be emailed to you by your instructor.
*Species name assignment is done randomly using Random.org
PART 1. (15 Marks)
1. Life history traits ? Describe the following life history traits for your species:
a) What taxonomic classification does this species belong to (i.e. family, order)?
b) Habitat requirements
c) Distribution in Canada
2. Describe the biological/ecological traits of the species that has made it susceptible
to extinction.
4. Summarize the conservation policies/strategies being developed or implemented by
any level of government. That is, what is being done by government(s) (or even
industry) to protect the species in Canada?
Please include references when necessary, using proper and consistent referencing style
such as APA. Websites are acceptable, but you must provide the name of the author or
organization and date the site was visited within the citation in the main body of your
report. The details, including the URL, are then provided in the reference section.

The website/organization must be credible, such as a government body or scientific
organization. Wikipedia or similar websites are not acceptable sources.
This section should be no more than 2‐3 pages double‐spaced. Marks will be allocated for
appropriate referencing and consistency in referencing style.
PART 2. Connecting Research to Conservation Management: Assessment of a
Scientific Journal Article (10 Marks)
Find a peer‐reviewed scientific journal article that includes original research on your
assigned endangered species. This article should be studying the species in some capacity
as a threatened or endangered species. Although it would be ideal to find a Canadian article,
you are allowed to use an article from a different region, as long as it focuses on the
conservation issues related to the species. Your assigned species need not be the only
species studied in the article, but it should be part of the study. REVIEW PAPERS ARE NOT
ACCEPTABLE.
Once you have found a suitable article (feel free to check with your instructor), provide the
article?s title, list of authors and journal title in a standard reference format. Address the
following in paragraph‐form. Feel free to use sub‐headings:
1. Describe the study objective(s)
2. Briefly describe the study design/methodology
3. What were the major findings/conclusions of this study?
4. Could these findings be used to improve our management/protection of the
endangered species? Explain why or why not.

information, and only including the salient features of the article. Therefore, this section of
your assignment should only be 1‐2 pages, double‐spaced. Also avoid plagiarizing directly
from the article, as this will be checked.
