In the first few weeks of class we have discussed how the idea of the picture informs the idea of suburban life, the design of suburban buildings and landscapes, and the representation of suburbia in visual culture. In the process, we have discussed how distinctly pictorial stylistic features (such as theatricality, the picturesque, liveness, intimacy, and charm) help to structure suburbia as a social environment—one defined by particular ways of representing the relationship between public and private space, nature and community, social exclusion and inclusion, moral and immoral behavior, freedom and commercial interests, and ugliness and beauty, among other things.
Your primary task for this paper is to write a detailed analysis of how the idea of the picture informs the stylistic attributes of either one representation of suburbia (for instance, a scene from a film, a magazine ad, a painting, or a TV show) OR one suburban environment (for instance, a suburban house, landscape, mall, etc.). However, the goal of the paper assignment as a whole is to incorporate this analysis into a focused, compelling argument about how the particular use of these attributes in the image/environment you discuss define suburbia as a social environment.
They should also demonstrate a clear understanding of the stylistic features they discuss and the terms they use—such as “picturesque,” “liveness,” or “beauty”—by citing relevant readings on the subject. To this end, they will incorporate at least one scholarly source from either assigned or unassigned readings on relevant subjects, and will properly cite all sources using either MLA references or Chicago Style footnotes—including information from lecture.

— Treat this argument like a court case: avoid generalizations and opinions and make sure to provide analytical evidence for every claim you make. In other words, give lots of examples and avoid making claims you can’t illustrate with them. These claims are probably too broad or else deal in opinion; they will not convince a jury of your point.
–Enjoy the creative dimension of interpretation! As long as you can support your reading with clear, convincing examples you can make a cogent and compelling argument to your reader, and that is the primary goal of an essay.
