Competency 981.1.1: Capstone – The graduate integrates and synthesizes competencies from across the degree program and thereby demonstrates the ability to participate in and contribute value to the chosen professional field.

Introduction:

This will be the main portion of your capstone in which you explore your work and explain it to your reader. Each of the task parts builds on the other; however, you may wish to write the parts out of sequence depending on your writing style. This format is similar to requirements for grant proposals or publication, so this may be applicable to your future work in health informatics or health information management (HIIM).

Task:

A. Describe how your topic applies to the clinical area or workplace by doing the following:

1. Describe the clinical area or workplace setting of the topic area.
a. Discuss roles of any participants or key people in the clinical area or workplace.
2. Explain how the topic area evolved within the field of HIIM.
3. Explain how your topic area influences the clinical area or workplace.
4. Explain challenges that are inherent in this topic area.
a. Discuss why these challenges occur.
b. Discuss the negative impact of these challenges.
c. Discuss how these challenges are resolved in the HIIM clinical area or workplace.
5. Describe the impact this HIIM topic area has on the profession as a whole.
6. Discuss any research methodology you used in investigating this topic.

B. Recommend areas for further research in this HIIM topic area.

C. Develop a reference list of all the references you cited in your capstone report.

D. Create an appendix for your project that includes the following:
1. Appendices and exhibits important to the project that are referenced in the report
2. Data-gathering instruments (e.g., surveys, questionnaires)
3. The “Capstone Project Employer Verification Form” you used to obtain permission to conduct your capstone in the organization

E. Develop an abstract (maximum length of 150 words).

F. When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
