American Literature II, Civil War-Present

Literary Analysis/Research Paper Assignment

As part of your grade for this course, you will write a research paper on a literary subject of your choice.

You must use MLA citation style, quote from both primary and secondary sources, and write a Works Cited list (which is not part of the page/word count).

You may choose any work or author from the time period covered in this course, whether or not we read it in class. You will need to write the paper in drafts, and you will want to start your research now. Here’s a list of activities you will need to undertake in writing this paper:

1. Choose a text to write about. This can be a novel, essay, story, poem or play.
2. Develop a tentative thesis and outline.
3. Find at least one source of literary criticism on your topic or author, using
books or journal articles only. Journal articles can be found in the library databases. (Will proved once paper is almost complete)

ABSOLUTELY NO INTERNET MATERIAL. IF YOU USE THE
INTERNET IN ANY WAY, EVEN JUST TO READ ABOUT YOUR
TOPIC, YOU WILL RECEIVE AN “F” ON THIS PAPER—NO EXCEPTIONS.

4. Read and take notes on your sources. Choose some sentences or phrases from the source that will help you to analyze your text, or that say something you find
interesting, important, or especially relevant. Note the page number the sentences
and phrases come from. Print out or make copies of your sources, making sure to print the entire article and citation information.
5. Decide on a tentative thesis and outline.
6. Draft the paper.
7. Visit the Writing Center (first floor library) to get help with ideas for revision.
8. Do further research if necessary.
9. Revise the paper.
10. Prepare a list of works cited.
11. Type and proofread the first draft.
12. Revise the paper using comments from students and professor; type and proofread the final draft.

Final drafts must be typed, double-spaced, using 12-point font, with 1- inch margins all around. MLA citation style is required for this paper; if you don’t know what that is, you must visit the library and/or the writing center and ask them for materials and assistance. You must use at least one secondary source in your paper, which must be a book or journal article of literary criticism (articles can be from databases or hardcopy).

Some possible research topics are:
• An author’s treatment of gender, social class, or race/ethnicity
• The way that a historical reality (immigration, the great Depression or prohibition, racial segregation in the South, the idea of the American Dream, etc.) is shown or represented in a particular work
• American identity as represented or constructed in a text
• The relationship between the literary movement (Realism, Naturalism, Modernism, etc.) and the text
• Close reading of a character or characters in a literary work
• How the author weaves a major theme throughout a work

VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE THE INTERNET IN RESEARCHING AND
WRITING THIS PAPER. IF YOU USE THE INTERNET IN ANY WAY, EVEN JUST TO READ ABOUT YOUR TOPIC, YOU WILL RECEIVE AN “F” ON THIS PAPER—NO EXCEPTIONS
