Search Paper

What is it?  An I-Search Paper is your personal search to find out something you need to know.  Choose a topic that you care about.  You are being asked to investigate something you are interested in.  It should fulfill a need in you life.

How do I write it?  A good way to organize an I-Search Paper is simply to tell the story of what you did in your search, in the order in which everything happened.  Don’t tell everything, only the happenings and facts crucial to your hunt.  Don’t lecture to your readers but take them along on a journey.

A natural way to begin an I-Search Paper is to tell the reader what you know or don’t know about the subject.  Other information includes what you want to know, why you are writing the paper, and how the search will make a difference in your life.
?Searching:  This section is the story of your hunt.  Consult both primary sources (people who are experts in their field) and secondary sources (books, magazines or newspapers).  You must interview at least one person for this paper and consult a secondary source.
?Finding:  What did you learn?  What were you unable to find?  A search that failed can be as exciting and valuable as one that succeeded.  This section, which should be informative and fact-filled, should be the longest part of your paper.
?Conclusion:  What do you plan to do with this information?  How will it help you make a more informed decision?  How will this information change your life?
?Documentation:  Your paper must include internal or parenthetical documentation and a Works Cited page at the end.  (MLA reference as covered in Lesson 3 and the Discussion earlier in the semester.) You will need a Works Consulted page that lists people and publications consulted by you the writer, and helps the reader assess the reliability of the search.  Use the MLA format for documentation
