Henry Purcell – Dido and Aeneas – “Dido’s Lament”
Step 1: Choose one of the following pieces/movements to market:
– Henry Purcell – Dido and Aeneas – “Dido’s Lament” (CD 1, Track 10)
– G.F. Handel – Messiah – “Ev’ry Valley” (CD 2, Track 27)
– W.A. Mozart – Requiem Mass in D Minor, K. 626 – Dies Irae (CD 3, Track 16)
– Johannes Brahms – Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Op. 90 – Movement 3 (CD 4, Track
25
Step 2: Writing
You are going to try to figure out how to sell the piece you chose as a ‘single’ to 18-25-year- olds. Your ‘single’ needs to have some text that that will go into the CD booklet and that will appear with the album in online music sales forums (iTunes, Amazon, etc.). This text should tell 18-25-year old listeners the following:
– A little bit about the composer of the piece, the larger work from which the piece comes and the history of that work.
– A little bit about the sound of the piece and what 18-25-year-olds might find interesting in their listening experience.
– Anything else about the composer, piece, time-period the piece is from, etc. that you think would help it appeal to 18-25-year-olds and get them interested in the piece.
You need to communicate this information in 15 sentences (no more, no less). Each of these sentences should be a shining example of great writing. No poor writing, no fluff.
If you use ANY kind of research support in your writing—Internet sources, articles, even your textbook—you must cite it. MLA or APA style is fine.
Step 3: Visuals
Select 1 to 4 images to go on the ‘single’ album cover and to appear with the album when it is sold online. Put these images onto one sheet of paper and then explain why you chose the images you did. You can get creative with these images—you can select them from online, you can draw them, etc. These images should represent or relate to the piece and should appeal to 18-25 year olds. If you choose photos or artwork from the Internet, make sure to give the artist/photographer credit if he/she is identified! Also, with any image you obtain online, please list underneath it a link to the web-page from which it came so that I can go check it out myself.
A ground rule: One way that labels and musicians sell music is by putting visually attention- getting pictures on album covers. One thing we know from years of advertising data is that barely-clothed attractive people do increase sales of products (even those that have nothing to do with being attractive or unclothed). Though I hate to trample on your creativity, I am going to ask that you keep your album art appropriate. It’s true that Handel’s ‘Messiah’ might sell better to 18-25-year-olds if it has beautiful, nearly naked people on the cover. But because this is school, we’re going to keep it clean. So, think artwork for this project, not a Maxim magazine cover turned into an advertisement for Dido and Aeneas. When you’re an actual marketing executive, then you can use those images to sell Brahms.
