Assessment briefing:

• In order to complete this assessment you are required to attend an interview with a Housekeeping Manager/Assistant at a hotel (any star rating). All group members must attend the interview. It is imperative that you attend punctually and be fully prepared. It is CRUCIAL that you start to organise this interview in the first weeks of the module.
• All students must contribute equally in the preparation, investigation and report submission. It is therefore imperative that you all cross fertilise at all parts of the process as if some students do not know the reports content this will impact the whole of the groups final report mark.
• It must be completed in report format and follow the below template when submitting
• You must investigate all the areas required
• You must include academic theory throughout your report and use the Harvard convention throughout the report.
• In order to complete this assessment successfully it is important that the interview is well planned and structured. You will need to meet in your groups of four in advance and plan your interview strategy. You will need to have undertaken secondary research on the topics listed above and formulated your questions in advance.
• It should be well presented in appearance, without spelling or grammatical errors and figures, charts and tables used as appendices to enhance visual appearance
• Please inform your lecturer if you have not secured an interview by week 8 (23 November 2012)

The assignment brief

The assessment requires you to undertake an interview with a Housekeeping Manager/Assistant Manager of a hotel (minimum 50 rooms). You are required to carry out fact finding research on the following:

? the key challenges facing housekeeping managers
? the role of outsourcing within the housekeeping (HK) department
? safety and security issues to be followed in HK
? environmental policy in the HK department
Once you have collected the data you must compare it with academic theory and identify any gaps or, similarities. Then you must provide recommendations. This must be submitted in the form of a written group report.

Investigate if there are any similarities, differences or gaps between the real thing and the books and explain why you believe there are gaps.

• safety and security issues to be followed in HK
• environmental policy in HK department 50%
Conclusion and Recommendations Based on your investigation provide 5 recommendations to be passed onto the executive housekeeper on areas where they can improve their HK operation 20%

Appendices Any evidence collected should be submitted in the appendices 5%
