Read Steven H. Goldberg’s book, Billions of Drops in Millions of Buckets: Why Philanthropy Doesn’t
Advance Social Progress. Goldberg’s thesis is that traditional philanthropy has not helped to advance
social progress because there is a disconnect between funding and results. Great nonprofits are not
rewarded with increased funding and weak nonprofits do not lose contributions. Results-oriented
philanthropy must support high-performing nonprofits, thereby distributing money in the way that will give
it the greatest impact.
After reading Goldberg and considering everything you have studied and read in this course, for your final
assessment write an 8- to 12-page paper (2000 to 3000 words) in which you consider whether or not you
agree with his basis thesis, as follows:
(Section 1: 1-2 pages) Begin by restating Goldberg’s argument and then take a stance for or against it.
(Section 2: 5-7 pages) In support of the argument (either a critique of or in support of Goldberg) conduct
research to present and summarize at least three concrete examples not already
covered in the book or the course.
In your concluding section, address some of the more “high-level: questions such as:
o Discuss whether government has been more or less successful as a funder of nonprofit
causes than foundations, corporations, or individuals.
o Analyze whether “investing” in nonprofits to grow capacity and scale their services is an
answer to the nonprofit sector dilemma of achieving meaningful successes.
o Evaluate whether investors should play an active role in the development of the nonprofit.
(Section 3: 2-3 pages) This is by no means an exhaustive list of topics. Your discussion in the concluding
section will derive directly from the examples chosen in Section 2.
