Memo Intercultural (Mis)Communication

Memo Intercultural (Mis)Communication

This is a Communications Skills Assignment Related to Directly to Chapter 15 and Chapter 4 from text book Communicating in the 21st Century 3rd Edition Authors Baden Eunson John Wiley and Sons Australia (2012). This is very important as this is the only source to be used. Chapter 15 deals with Intercultural Communication in organisations/ the work place. Hence it discusses Theories and models of communication Hofstedes, Houses Globe, Halls High Context Low Context and other theories. Chapter 4 shows how a MEMO is set out. The assignment is based on a case study scenarion that I will attach. The writer is to read the scenario and identify the communication problems in relation to Inter-cultural Communications. They are then to follow a template to structure their report and recommendations and then place it in a MEMO format.
That can be found in Chapter 4 on how to write a MEMO. However this needs to be a HARD COPY MEMO not an EMAIL version.

e scenario is an Australian Manager has been appointed a Senior Manager of Sales in St Paulo Brazil. She took on the role and went to Brazil putting in changes and strategies that led to a decrease in profits rather than an increase. In relation to Houses Globe and Halls High and Low Context theories and also Hofstedes.

There are issues relating to Brazilian culture that is different to Australian Culture. Hence the writer of this assignment needs to ASSUME THE ROLE OF AN EXPERT CONSULTANT who THE AUSTRALIAN MANAGER HAS CONTACTED TO ASSIST IN IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEMS AND PROVIDING RECOMMENDATIONS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUES IN THE BRAZILIAN DIVISION OF THE GLOBAL COMPANY. THEN THE WRITER MUST JUSTIFY AND LINK THE THEORIES FROM CHAPTER 15 to THE SOLUTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS>
THIS CAN BE A ONE PAGE TWO PAGE MAXIMUM. HENCE I NEED IT ASAP. I WILL UPLOAD EXACT CRITERIA if this can be accepted by a writer understanding these issues

Background
Michelle Banks, an ambitious young executive, has been sent to take over the Sales branch of her Australian company in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Most of the employees have worked with the company for more than 20 years. She spent a few weeks learning routines with the departing manager and was somewhat disturbed by the informality and lack of discipline that seemed to characterise the office. Employees seemed to indulge in excessive socialising, conversations seemed to deal more with personal matters (especially family) than business matters, and no one seemed to keep to their set timetables. Although her employees imply that their work is ?going well?, she is frustrated to find that they regularly do not complete tasks properly, which leads Michelle to feel deceived.

Michelle?s Strategy
Once she formally took over, Michelle devised strategies to address what she felt was general ?slackness? within the company. Michelle did the following:
Created a ?more businesslike atmosphere? by holding regularly scheduled, formal meetings.
Enforced a more rigid timetable.
Interviewed each employee, taking a straightforward, direct approach.
Introduced staff sales ?can-do? competitions.
Offered higher bonuses and incentives to those who performed well.
Issued warnings to those who do not perform well.
Re-configured the open-plan office to make room for cubicles, providing employees with more privacy.
Organised compulsory time management workshops.

By the end of the first quarter, Michelle felt she had considerably improved the situation. However, when the most recent sales figures were released, she was surprised to find that they had decreased significantly since her takeover.
