The Mid Staffordshire inquiry is a breaking story in the UK with further reports due for publication in addition to many commentaries on the organisation.

For the assessment you are required to prepare a written assignment of 4,000 words on the Mid- Staffordshire case study. The assignment requires you to diagnose the need for change at Mid Staffordshire (around 1,000 words).
Then, for the salient issues you identify in your diagnosis critically consider using the literature and research on change management how you would approach the changes required, conclude by indicating which areas should be priorities (around 3,000 words).
The key resource for this is Volume 1 of the report published in 2010:

The Mid Staffordshire inquiry is a breaking story in the UK with further reports due for publication in addition to many commentaries on the organisation. In developing your analysis of Mid Staffordshire you are encouraged to research widely and incorporate the latest developments.
It is a detailed case study of an organisation of an organisation in need of change. In addition the case study provides complexity and scope and therefore it provides a ‘real world’ opportunity to practise the key management tasks of identifying the issues, formulating these as an interconnected series of problems and considering alternative approaches to resolve these. The assignment asks you to diagnose the problems and consider alternative approaches to resolve these using the research on change management and leadership.
In tackling this assignment you may decide to adopt a broad perspective and consider the organization as a whole or you may wish to focus on a key area or areas (justifying why) and explore these in greater depth.
In performing your diagnosis you may generate quite extensive tables. As a rough rule tables of much more than half a page are beginning to be lengthy and should be considered for inclusion in appendices. When you include a table in an appendix you should include a selective précis of the key content from the table probably in a mini cut down version of the table. In using tables make sure you have a relevant comment to introduce the table (one line?) and make sure that you summarise the significance of the table at the end. ‘This shows that ….etc’. Tables can never do all the talking for you, and it is important you confirm the key points.
Assessment Criteria
1. Presentation: was the work professionally presented, clear, the right length and correctly referenced?

Use Harvard referencing and apply this consistently.
Ensure you reference salient points from the Mid- Staffordshire report that you refer to in your diagnosis or the discussion.
Appropriate use of paragraphs – this is a report. Arial 10 font, single line spacing (please do not double space), one line space between paragraphs, no indents.
Bullet points may be used to summarise and present analysis. Ensure that you have an explanatory paragraph commenting on the significance of any such list. Be careful not to overuse bulleted lists.
Try and include tables, charts, analysis, models etc or a précis version if these are too large in the main text.
2. Scope: was the topic/subject for the assignment well-chosen, and was the range of literature and research and tools/models included/considered in the assignment appropriate?

Identifies key change issues using change diagnosis models to appraise the need for change.
Includes a wider selection of literature and management research on change independently researched by the author.
3. Critical Analysis: was there applied and critical use of literature/research, tools/ models, in detailed sections of the work?

in the diagnostic phase you will be using a tools and models that are widely used and generally accepted. Thoughtful adaptation is encouraged though, e.g. combining models or adding an extra dimension to a model. Therefore your main focus is on applied analysis rather than explaining why you think a particular model that everyone uses anyway is a good idea here.
In the critical review phase you are balancing four things: the Mid-Staffs context, alternative change management theories and what these imply for the context, and your own view as to which theorises are preferable in this context and why?
4. Integration: did the detailed sections fit together well and form a coherent whole with a clear beginning, a clear ending, and continuity of logic throughout?
There are two key areas of integration. The first is to identify in your diagnosis an appropriate area of focus that is plausible and justified. The second which follows on from the first is to address these themes in turn and end with a review of your change priorities.
