Book Review

Each student will be required to write a 750 word to 1,000 word (3 to 5 double-spaced pages) critical book review. This book review should be selected from one of the following books:

Last Train to Paradise – Les Standiford
Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley: African Princess, Florida Slave, Plantation Slaveowner – Daniel Schafer
An American Beach for African Americans – Marsha Phelts
Slavery in Florida – Larry Rivers
The Oldest City – Jean Parker Waterbury
The Other War of 1812: The Patriot War – James Cusick
Three Voyages – Rene Laudonniere

 

Please adhere to the following format. Label each section with the appropriate Roman numerals, and then provide the requested information.

I. Bibliographical information on the book. This should read as follows:

Title. Author’s name. (Place of Publication, Publisher, copyright date)

II. Identification of the author’s thesis. What was the main point of the book? Summarize the author’s argument. What is the author attempting to prove to you? Why was the book written?

III. Evidence that supports the thesis. Present the evidence that the author uses to support his thesis. The evidence should come from throughout the entire book. Include a page number in parentheses for each piece of evidence. (This is sort of an “internal footnote” and shows where the idea came from.) Keep direct quotes to a minimum, unless they are particularly insightful.
This section will be the bulk of your review. Remember that this is not a summary of the book. This is an analysis of the evidence that the author provides, and how it supports his thesis.

IV. Your reaction to the author’s thesis. Has the author proved his thesis? What types of sources did he use? Does his evidence make sense to you? Have you learned a new viewpoint, or does his thesis even “fit” with what you know of history? Summarize your reactions to the book in a scholarly way. Would you recommend the book to others? Why or why not?
