how law is “made”

how law is “made”

how we come to have
the laws we have, and how and why the law changes over time. This assignment asks
you to identify a law that was recently made or changed and to think about how and why
that happened.
Requirements: Locate a newspaper article published in the Los Angeles Times, New
York Times, Washington Post or Chicago Tribune in the last three months that reports on
some aspect of law making and/or law changing. Drawing on ideas and information
presented in class, please write a two-page paper discussing: (1) what type or types of law
is involved; (2) what the law requires; (3) what the intended purpose is of this new law or
change in the law; (4) whether the law is likely to achieve its intended purpose; (5)
whether you think there will be a discrepancy between the “law on the books” and the
“law in action;” (6) what social, cultural, political and economic factors might have
influenced the creation of the law.
Please staple a copy of the news article to your paper. There is no need to summarize the
article—you may assume the grader will read it. Your paper should begin directly by
describing the change in the law (what was the law before? how has it changed?),
describing what law making bodies (legislatures, courts, administrative agencies etc.)
were involved, and discussing why this change in the law occurred. The paper should be
no more than two pages in length and must be typed and double-spaced.
