We previously had to do submit a first draft of our research topic and potential research questions in Module 1 and received feedback from your classmates and instructor. You probably might be thinking about revising your research topic, based on the feedback. Some people believe that one of the most difficult parts of a dissertation is to be able to clearly state a research topic. You may be one of these.

As you revise your research topic, remember that you want a manageable research topic that will allow you to begin and finish your dissertation in a reasonable amount of time. As you provide feedback to others in your class, hopefully you will find that your feedback also assists you in better understanding your own topic. In this module, you re-state or refine your research topic and develop and/or refine a researchable question from your research topic.

What are the potential relationships between the success rate or education level of a child and growing up in a household with parents on drugs?

Educational Significance of the Topic: This study is important as a tool for identifying the effect of parent drug use on the development and success of children. It is my hope that the results will lead to a better understanding of the relationships and can be used extensively in the field of counseling for both parents and children.

Because youths adopt life decisions and characters from the relationships they have with their parents and peers. Most teenagers whose parents have a drug habit end up dropping out of school and leading unsuccessful lives. The need for this study is to identify the impact of drug habits from parents on the quality of life of their children.

The need for this study is to identify the impact of drug habits from parents on the quality of children’s lives.

Reason for Interest in this Topic: The reason for selecting this topic for study is that I grew up in a family with parents who were drug addicts. Notably, my mother was an addict of cocaine and this affected me heavily. Despite my terrible upbringing, I managed to continue with my education. However, most of my friends with similar family backgrounds were unlucky. They ended up being school dropouts and leading extremely miserable lives around the same neighborhood. Their parents seemed to care less about their progress in life. However, I observed that children from families with stable parents rarely terminated their education. Most of them led very successful lives as their parents motivated them to complete their education.

Whereas this research suggest that drug use among parents affects the education level and success rate of children, my focus will be to establish the validity of this statement on an international level. Special consideration will be on African American families due to prevalence of drug abuse around their neighborhood to enable the research to be manageable. Data collection will also be limited to recognized world organizations.

I was then able to use the key words in my initial questions to help locate research articles in the databases and to begin thinking about a possible theoretical or conceptual framework that could link them, as I reviewed empirical articles on my topic. I also received minimal feedback from peers on the topic and initial questions, especially around how to think about research questions in a more focused, relational way: how one variable [independent] might relate to or affect another variable [dependent].
Consider these variables–think about what you might want to explore/investigate. Keep in mind what I have learned about theory: You may want to re-look at Creswell’s rainbow concept in Module 3 of a theoretical framework as an arc bridging possible variables ( you can find this in teh Doc SHare que.. Please make sure you look at the readings the chapter on the theory also talks about independent and dependent variables so the readings are a must to understand and complete the assignment. Also, think about the recent peer discussions around the idea of a theoretical or conceptual framework as another way to help you, along with the supplementary materials on research topics/research questions in Doc Sharing.
