-Select advertisements that contain at least some text for you to analyze (some advertisements don’t have any text beyond the name of the product, which can make the rhetorical analysis challenging).

-Select advertisements that are somewhat unique to a particular magazine. Select an advertisement that would not appear in a different type of magazine (e.g., you would likely not find a shoe advertisement in a car magazine, but you could very likely find a car advertisement in a running magazine).

-Select advertisements that you can compare or contrast effectively.

Use the following questions as a guide as you complete your Rhetorical Analysis.

1. What is the context? Examine the cover of the magazine, and skim through the magazine’s articles and advertisements to develop a sense of the context. Also, what month was the magazine published? Does that change the types of advertisements that you see?
2. Who is the intended audience and what are their values? You can develop a sense of the audience and their values by an examination of the magazine’s articles and advertisements.
3. Who is the author and how does the author establish credibility? Consider the 3 elements of credibility discussed in class: sound sense (how intelligent and knowledgeable the author is), integrity or morality, and benevolence (how sincerely the author is concerned with the welfare of the audience). Also consider if the author has a particular reputation or uses someone with a particular reputation and how that shapes the persuasiveness of the piece.
4. What sorts of logical appeals does the author use? Is the logic sound (does it make sense) and is it trustworthy? Or is it designed to trick the audience?
5. How does the author appeal to the audience’s emotions? Is the appeal to emotions appropriate given the context?
6. Are there any other persuasive strategies involved?

These questions are designed to make you think about the advertisements and their use of rhetoric. Some questions are interrelated, and you should NOT simply answer these questions in numerical order.
