As we are learning, substances can be those that are prescribed by a physician, purchased over the counter, found in the kitchen, or bought from the local “dealer.” They made us feel more “adult”, “cool,” sexy, “to fit in and be one of the guys”, or even to just get high. We use them to wake up in the morning, relax during the day, go off to sleep at night. We take them to feel powerful, to lose weight, to heal our bodies or get relief of pain from a physical condition. We take time to cover up the “truth” from ourselves, to seek comfort from emotional pain, or to be “the life of the party.” And at times, we have experienced the negative effects of these substances with addiction, withdrawal symptoms, feeling intoxicated, having a hangover, getting arrested, causing an automobile accident, being combative, hurting a loved one, or passing out. In some way the use and/or abuse of substances has affected all of us.

You can use a fictional client this can be someone you know who has a history of drugs use personally or yourself.
In a reflective writing style, address the following in depth and detail:

“How the Use or Abuse of Substances Has Affected Me and My Life”

As you think about your paper, consider the following areas:

Patterns of use of substances that you have seen in your life.
For example, in the case of prescribed medications, were they used in the proper manner or “shared” with others? With alcohol or other types of “recreational” substances), what type(s) of use have you seen: social or recreational use, regular use, abusive use, or dependent (alcoholic) use?

Your family system.
Did substance use affect the way in which you were parented?
What role did substances play at family gatherings?

Generational use.
Did your grandparents use particular substances on a regular basis? For example, your grandfather always smoked a pipe, your father smokes a pipe, and so you do too because you think this is a way to appear masculine. Or, your grandparents always served alcohol at dinner and that carries on in your family.

Your Peer Group.
The people you socialize with the most.

Sociocultural factors.
For example, these are factors related to your social background, your economic level, and your culture or ethnicity.

Your Neighborhood and the area in which you live.

Positive and Negative effects of the substances.
Refer to the opening paragraph above for examples of these.

The Social Climate of the Time(s) you are discussing as to the general acceptance/encouragement of the use of certain substances.

Age in which you used certain substances and were these uses expected and looked forward to.

Vocation/Career Expectations (i.e., using alcohol to entertain clients).

Media Influences (including advertising) and the messages you received about substance use.
