Newsworthi?ness

Newsworthi?ness
For this paper you will find a Chicago, illinois newspaper, such as the chicago tribune or the sun times, between the dates 2/4-2/8 and you will Apply Dominick’s six criteria for newsworthiness to the stories you’ve listed. Discuss each of these news values separately. The six main topics of the body of your paper should be: timeliness, proximity, prominence, consequence, human interest, and economics. MAke sure you have a paragraph on each!
Conclude with a paragraph that presents some summary evaluation of the news selection in this newspaper based on whatever you find most interesting. For example, you could consider the extent to which items that really aren’t “news” were included in the newspaper. What items were these? (Just because people are interested in something, does that make it “news?”) Should something have received more coverage? If so, what would you cut? Or you might consider the source of the various stories might have been – anything from PR firms? Did you see any stories using news releases? Or, you might consider ethical issues – what was done ethically right? Was anything ethically suspect? You could, if you wished, discuss the quality of the writing, and the use of visuals. You could try to determine the newspaper’s target audience based on your review of the news content. How effective do you think the paper is at reaching its target audience? You could consider what was especially well-done overall, and what was especially poorly-done. These ideas are presented as examples of what you could do in your conclusion; do not feel obligated to focus on any of these if something else strikes you. Do NOT try to address all of the items in this list; select one or two points to consider in your conclusion. However you wish to approach it, conclude with your overall evaluation of the newspaper’s coverage of that day’s news.
The best papers fold in multiple examples of news stories to illustrate each of the criteria, focusing on one or two examples in each criterion as the most important (detailed) examples. Please note that you can present multiple examples in an efficient (i.e., not lengthy) manner – it’s all in how you write about what you see. Be sure not to force news stories into categories in which they don’t fit. IMPORTANT: you must italicize the title of your newspaper every time you refer to it. You must use the first person (I) do not use YOU !! Also when refering to the newspaper do not say “they” a newspaper is singular so refer to it as “it” DO NOT go over 3 pages!! And ONLY use DOminick to cite (Dom, 2013, pg #?)
The book i am refering to that will be the only book you can cite is:
*** Joseph R. Dominick, The Dynamics of Mass Communication, 12th edition. McGraw-Hill. All exam/quiz questions will be taken from this edition.

If you have trouble fitting articles into the 6 categories these descriptions as well as the book might help:

Timeliness: You will know something is timely if the news is current looks for words such as today or the latest news… you will find this in the majority of your articles

Proximity: news happens nearby and we want to read about news that matters to us. this is called geographic proximity. Psych proximity might refer to a story where something is going on that another town can relate to. when you share the same problem as someone else we care about how they are responding because we are interested in solving the problem ourselves. WHo is the audience?

Prominence: Pominent people are important so there are a lot of stories that wouldnt make the news except for the fact that the person in the story is a prominent person. THe president is a prominent person and is often in the news as well as celebrities.

Consequence: WHat kind of impact does the story have? does it matter? how much does it directly affect chicago? The more consequence the more newsworthy it is.

Human interest:Can be serious, dramatic, comical. usually wont fall into any other category. for example a person with cancer that runs a marathon is human interest. people run marathons everyday but it is a human interest piece becasue that particular person is facing a ery serious disease and still going. another example is every year in october we talk about who has the biggest pumpkin. that would be a human interest piece

Economic: WHen media outlet includes content to save $, Make $ or capitalize resources. We put a lot of things in the newspaper that we know are appealing and will make money
