Examine one of the films, from a critical perspective, that we are watching in class:
Your review must take a critical approach to the form of film – how the film is made – and its subsequent effect on the overall meaning of the work (content). As we have examined in painting, photography and drama/theater, the critical tools you’ve been employing apply here too:

• What is it about (subject matter)?
• How is put together (artistic form)?
• How does the artist/filmmaker translate the subject into meaning through the use of the medium’s form (content)?
• What is your view on the work’s overall success as a film (participation)?

Your piece must address the artistic tools available to the medium of film, including: lighting, music, use of color (or shadow in black and white), character (how developed, how portrayed, how positioned within each shot), dialogue, tension/conflict and its resolution, and, most importantly, the use of camera angles and shots (establishing shot, jump cuts, close-up, high angle, low angle, etc – see your text for more).

Imagine you are writing this review for a magazine or newspaper; as such your critique must be amply descriptive of scenes – paint the picture for your reader so they can envision this without having seen the film. Also, in any review adequate support (evidence, examples) is necessary to fully state your case.

Think, too, of the context within which each piece was made (evaluative criticism). For example, Umberto D is a leader of the genre of Italian Neo-Realism (a product of post-war devastation in Europe), Blow Up takes on the counter culture of the 60s along with mainstream advertising/media (using jazz, emerging rock) and the political upheaval of a younger generation that was brewing in the 60s. What statement is the artwork making of its time?
