ADDICTIONS
In this module, you will explore different types of treatment settings for individuals suffering from addictions.
Your readings in this module will cover models of addiction. Some models originate from psychological theories such as behavioral and psychodynamic theories. The field of addictions treatment, however, comprises a number of other models such as the moral model, sociocultural models, and the medical model. In this module, you will get an overview of these models. You will select any two models and compare and contrast them, keeping in mind their efficacy in working with addicts and alcoholics.
You will continue with the abstinence experiment. You will analyze the abstinence experience from an addictions standpoint. You will examine the source of the addiction (from where it all started), look at the motivation for stopping the behavior or activity, and explore the potential for relapse.
You will select the topic for your final project on teaching, supervision, or ethics in addictions counseling in this module. Be sure your facilitator approves your topic. While selecting the topic, note its importance and relevance.
In Module 3, you will examine substances of abuse and their effects.

• Identify, compare, and contrast the different theoretical models of addiction (e.g. moral, disease, biopsychosocial, etc.) as well as emerging perspectives on addiction (e.g. addiction as an attachment disorder, etc.) and their efficacy with diverse populations.
• Apply current theoretical models and perspectives to assess and conceptualize clients with addictions or dual diagnosis and formulate effective treatment plans for them and their families.
• Identify, compare, and contrast different treatment modalities such as support groups, therapy groups, individual counseling, inpatient and
outpatient treatment as they relate to diverse clients with addiction and their families.
• Apply legal and ethical guidelines for working with students, supervisees, and clients with addiction and their families.
• Critically evaluate research in the field of addiction, while gaining an awareness of pertinent research findings and emerging methodologies.
• Analyze their own intersecting identities and their intergenerational interactions with addictions to develop strategies to deal with any countertransference issues that may arise.
