Subject: Art

Please compare and contrast 2 or more of the following images. Obviously I’ve chosen them because they are portraits, done in different media (I’m not disclosing what the types of photo are, I want you to discuss it.) Try to limit your first posts to emphasizing ONE formal element: composition, tonality, focus, poses, texture. Be CLEAR about the point you are making. Subsequently, also post about subject matter and meaning(s).
and then read two other posts and respond to those ideas.

1. For this discussion I will be the comparing David Octavius Hill’s Misses Binney to Thomas Easterly’s Keokuk.
When comparing these two images there is an immediately noticeable different in the feeling created by each image. In Misses Binney the woman are featured in an intimate embrace, their eyes looking down, away from the camera, their bodies positioned at a angle. Another distinct feature of this photograph is that there is a clear direction of light as seen through the shadows. In contrast, Easterly’s Keokuk displays a Native American facing the camera directly, his eyes focused to the camera completely. The shadows in this photograph are subtle and the source of light no obvious. This portrait is more interested in focusing in on the details of man; his enlivened and intense stare, the folds of his skin, and his Native American attire, and this is emphasized through the use of a light background that gives contrast to the sitter. (Lindsay) This is a noticeable difference from Misses Binney in which the women have darkness behind them and their images are softened; not intensely detailed as Keokuk. This image displays the man with clear and crisp definition that shows him as he would look in reality, while Misses Binney creates an image that is more artistic in quality and composure.

2. I chose to compare the Misses Biney image and the English image because I noticed how similar the exposure and lighting are in these photographs. However, the color and the subject matter are very different. Both portraits have a grainy quality, which probably means the light was low rather than bright at the time of the exposure. In both images, the shadows and highlights are very strong, which could suggest a long exposure time. The first image is comforting and portrays two young girls who seem to be very close. The picture seems to be dyed, possibly with vegetable dye or iron salts, which creates a sepia-tone. It’s possible that the sitters in the portrait were put at ease to look informal and more life-like. This method was used by Southworth. In the second image, the poser seems to be stiff and concentrating, which clearly shows that this photograph is a daguerreotype. The image is black and white and probably did not include the extra step of dying the image.
