Research Paper

History is a matter of interpretation. Historians look at a number of primary sources and try to construct some sort of thesis. Because historians’ perspectives and outlooks differ, they develop conflicting theses that contribute to important debates about the past. These debates constitute the lifeblood of history. What makes this whole process so devilishly tricky is that most primary sources are themselves interpretations?contemporary interpretations close to the event, but interpretations nonetheless. Consequently, history consists of interpretations of interpretations.

In this class, you will shoulder the difficult burden of the historian. I will ask you to select an event associated with European history since 1945 from the list below. Then I would like you to read how contemporary news sources interpreted the event and write a paper of 1500-1750 words describing what you found. Remember, I?m asking you to look at source material (newspapers in any language, magazine articles, books, etc.) contemporary to the events in the question, not contemporary to our own time. For example, The New York Times, like many other domestic and foreign newspapers, is available digitally and searchable in its entirety through the online UMUC library catalog. Browse through the library?s resources, consult the librarians and support staff, and come up with a collection of decent materials that bear on the topic you?ve selected.

As you read, remember that I expect you to look at the way the news source reported the event in its regular columns, but even more important, I want you look at what angle or perspective the publication adopted. This paper will require not merely description but analysis. The big question you ought to consider is not just "What did this source say about the event?" but "What did it mean or argue?"

Please think about the following issues as you do your research since they could potentially provide the basis for a thesis statement:

– How did the source in question interpret the event? What particular themes did it pursue in its reporting and especially its editorializing? For instance, did it believe the event would lead to long term political consequences?

– Did the interpretation of the event change over time? Did the initial reaction of that particular source to an event mutate into something different with the passage of weeks or months?

– Did the source appear to betray some biases or predilections in its reporting or editorializing?
