T1 2014 Assignment Two

Marks:                               20%

Online Quiz:                   During your class time in Week 11 (Monday 19 May 2014-Friday 23 May 2014)

Background

This assignment requires you to perform inferential techniques (based on Lectures and Tutorials in Weeks 8 and 9) on the SinoCorp dataset and then answer twenty (20) multiple choice questions relating to your analysis.

Therearethree(3)partstothisassignment:

Part1:Data Analysis (calculations done by hand, with help from Excel)

Part2:Interpret Results (i.e. write a sample response letter to Lily’s letter)

Part3:CompleteOnlineQuiz(link in Moodle under Week 11, during your Week 11 class)

To complete the assignment you must first analyse the SinoCorp dataset which will enable you to answer the specific questions asked in Lily Wang’s letter (see page 2). Second, you should interpret the results and be able to convey your conclusions in plain English. Once you have done these two tasks, you will then be able to complete the online quiz which contains twenty (20) randomly selected questions that relate to the data analysis, interpretation, and reporting of the results.

Part 1 and Part 2 may be completed individually or in a group of a few students. However, Part 3, the Online Quiz, will be completed individually during class time. Each student will receive a different set of 20 questions. You will have 60 minutes to complete the quiz.

The assignment uses the same file as Assignment 1, namely “SinoCorp.xlsx” which can be downloaded from the MIBT Portal.

Note:

1. You DO NOT need to submit any data analysis or any written work. However, you WILL need to refer to your analysis and written work in order to answer the multiple choice questions.

2. You can work in a group or individually to complete the data analysis. However, all students

(whether you are in a group or not) must complete the online quiz in Moodle individually!

3. The online quiz will be made available by your lecturer for you to complete during your class time.

Extensions

Extensionfor medicalreasons

If you are unable to complete the quiz during your class time due to medical reasons you MUST contact YOUR lecturer BEFORE Week 11(that is by 5:00 pm, Friday, 16 May 2014). You MUST provide a valid medical certificate for the day of your class time if you are unable to attend. Your lecturer will then make alternative arrangements. Extensions will NOT be granted if you do not supply a valid medical certificate, and DNS (Did Not Submit) will be recorded.

Scenario

As was the case in Assignment 1, you are once again playing the role of Emily Zhang, Senior Analyst at SinoCorp. Lily Wang , Human Resources Manager at SinoCorp, has written to you again regarding the SinoCorp dataset. Her letter is reproduced below. The basis for your analysis is again the file “SinoCorp.xlsx”.

For Attention:                   Emily Zhang, Senior Analyst                                                                                         28/04/2014

From:                                    Lily Wang, Human Resources Manager

Regarding:                          Further analysis of SinoCorp dataset

Dear Emily,

Thank you for your earlier responses. In order for me to finalise the SinoCorp employeeprofilerequiredbyseniormanagement, I need the following information.

  1. Could you please provide me with an estimate of…:
    1. … the mean salary for ALL SinoCorp employees?
    2. … the proportion of ALL SinoCorp employees who are (very and moderately) satisfied with their job?

  1. The mean salary across the industry is $28,500. Senior management claims that our employees earn more than the industry average. Could you please check on the validity of this claim?

  1. Senior management also believes that the proportion of (moderately and very) satisfied employees is at least 92% . Could you please advise whether this is true?

  1. It would be interesting to know if there is a difference in the mean salary between ALL male and ALL female employees. Could you please investigate and report?

  1. I am concerned that a dataset of 450 SinoCorp employees may not provide us with very accurate estimates. What sample size would be needed in order to be able to estimate…

  1. … the mean salary for ALL SinoCorp employees to within $900, with 95% confidence?
  2. … the proportion of ALL SinoCorp employees who are (very and moderately) satisfied with their job to within 2%, with 95% confidence?

I look forward to your response.

Regards

Lily Wang

Part1: Manual calculations (with relevant Excel output)

You will need to perform some manual calculations, using some results from thedata set “SinoCorp.xlsx”.

Youwill need to applytechniques you have learned/will learn during lectures and tutorials in Weeks 8 and 9, such as:

  • confidence intervals and
  • hypothesis tests.

Please work out the answers to the questions BY HAND, using Excel ONLY to calculate sample statistics such as the mean, standard deviation (see Week 2 tutorial) or proportion (see Week 1 tutorial)! If you rely exclusively on Excel, you will NOT be able to answer all the quiz questions!

  • For all confidence intervals and related calculations you can assume that a 95% confidence level is appropriate. For hypothesis tests a 5% level of significance (α = 0.05) is appropriate.

Guidelines

The editor hasaskedfora numberof taskstobedone.Thefollowingguidelinesforeachquestionshouldbefollowed:

1. (a) Could you please provide me with an estimate of the mean salary for ALL SinoCorp employees?

You will need to calculate an estimate of the mean salary for ALL SinoCorp employees, not just the ones in the sample.

You will need to be able to interpret your result as demonstrated in the lecture and tutorial.

HINT: The Week 8 lecture and tutorial may be helpful.

1. (b) Could you please provide me with an estimate of the proportion of ALL SinoCorp employees who are (very and moderately) satisfied with their job?

Before you can calculate an estimate of the proportion of ALL SinoCorp employees who are (very and moderately) satisfied with their job, you will need to first determine the relevant sample proportion from your data.

You will need to be able to interpret your result as demonstrated in the lecture and tutorial.

HINT: The Week 1 and 8 lectures and tutorials may be helpful.

2. The mean salary in this industry is $28,500. Senior management claims that Sinocorp employees earn more than the industry average. Could you please check this claim?

You will need to test senior management’s claim using the appropriate technique.

You will need to be able to interpret your result as demonstrated in the lecture and tutorial.

HINT: The Week 9 lecture and tutorial may be helpful.

3. Senior Management also believes that the proportion of (moderately and very) satisfied employees is 92% or more. Could you please advise whether this is true?

You will need to test if senior management’s suggested value is true by using the appropriate technique.

You will need to be able to interpret your result as demonstrated in the lecture and tutorial.

HINT: The Week 9 lecture and tutorial may be helpful.

  1.    It would be interesting to know if there is a difference in the mean salary between ALL male and ALL female employees. Could you please investigate and report?

You will need to find out if there is a difference in the mean salarybetween ALL male and female employees, not just the ones in the sample.

You will need to be able to interpret your result as demonstrated in the relevant lecture and tutorial, depending on which approach you have chosen.

HINT: The Week 8 lecture and tutorial may be helpful.

5.   I am concerned that a dataset of 450 SinoCorp employees may not provide us with very accurate estimates. What sample size would be needed in order to be able to estimate etc.–?

You will need to calculate required sample sizes to meet the specifications described in questions a and b. In part a, you can assume σ = $12,000.

You need to be able to provide the result.

HINT: The Week 8 lecture and tutorial may be helpful.

Generalguideline:

  • Beforedoinganyanalysis, classify all your variables as either numericalorcategorical. The techniquesyouwillusedependon thetypeofdatayouhave.

Part 2: Response to Lily

You do not need to submit any work for this assignment; however, you will need to be able to answer questions within a limited amount of time. Therefore, it is crucial that you write up a response to Lily, so that you can draw from your interpretations when working on the time-limited quiz.

Part 3: Online Quiz

As mentioned above, the link to the Assignment 2 Online Quiz will be available:

  • in Moodle under Week 11
  • during YOUR class time (your lecturer will give you access)

You will have 60 minutes to complete the quiz.
Preferably, you should have all your output for Part 1 and 2 printed out (or handwritten) so that you avoid computer problems by having multiple programs open when doing the quiz.

The quiz will consist of 20 multiple choice questions, randomly selected by the system from a large question pool. Each question is worth one (1) mark out of 20. Your achieved score will be automatically recorded in Moodle as your Assignment 2 mark.

IMPORTANT:

The questions may refer to the choice of technique, choice of distribution, the details about what a given technique does, calculated results, decisions and conclusions. This means that the questions will test your understanding of the relevant techniques, not only whether you have calculated the correct results and/or reached the correct conclusions. The “how” is also important.

You only have one (1) attempt to complete the quiz. Please make sure you read any instructions in Moodle carefully! No consideration will be given for human error (i.e. clicking on the wrong button)!

Once you begin the quiz, you will have a one-hour window to complete it. If you do not finish by the end of that one hour, the quiz will exit and any unsaved answers will be lost.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:

During the quiz, you are allowed to use any files or printouts of your analysis and your response letter, as well as any materials directly relevant to the assignment (lecture slides, tutorials, text book).

However, the use of the following materials is strictly prohibited during the duration of the quiz:

  • Any non-MIBT materials, such as materials from external tutors or tutoring businesses.
  • Any (printed) screenshots of previous online quizzes.
  • A mobile phone.
  • Other electronic devices (MP3 player, tablet device, camera, laptop, …)
  • Non-MIBT websites.

The use of any of the above materials will be considered cheating, and will result in an official report to the Academic Director for academic misconduct, as well as an automatic zero (0) for this assignment!

Good luck!!!
