This study is built on the assumption that modern media is affecting traditional diplomacy, but the specific focus will be on the WikiLeaks disclosures and their impact on U.S diplomatic discourse. The researcher will investigate the kind of change in U.S diplomacy that is ignited by these disclosures whose significance rests not only on their being an example of modern media impact, but on being an ideological tool trying to disclose secretive documents to the public. WikiLeaks is trying to force a change on the secretive nature of U.S diplomacy, and this study will investigate its failures and successes in doing so. How has U.S. diplomacy been changed or forced to change? Can traditional diplomacy resist the sort of threatening impact created by WikiLeaks? How do the WikiLeaks disclosures stand as different from other modern media in terms of its impact on traditional diplomacy?
To address these questions, this study must investigate what was going on within the U.S. diplomacy before WikiLeaks and then the effect of these disclosures on U.S. conduct diplomacy. While the U.S. administration emphasizes its transparency in public speeches and actions, the diplomatic documents leaked via WikiLeaks have proved the opposite. The diplomatic documents leaked expose the discrepancy between U.S public diplomacy in its declared foreign policy and what is discussed in its private �secretive� diplomatic reports. WikiLeaks must therefore be analyzed as a new challenge to the traditional diplomacy which is a systemic tool of international relations.
Building on this context, the study will try to answer the following questions: What shifts, variations, and fluctuations in American diplomatic discourse can be discerned before and after WikiLeaks? What possible reconceptualization of the standards of diplomatic discourse may occur in response to the revolutionary impact of the WikiLeaks documents? What is the future role of diplomacy in an open, transparent global arena which is affected by the power of media and technology in disclosing everything to the public and threatening the secretive nature of traditional diplomacy? Is there, in other words, a clear conflict between conventional diplomatic discourse and unconventional media coverage such as WikiLeaks disclosures?

The aim of this assessment item is to demonstrate that you have been able to construct a methodology plan which is the most appropriate for your research.

After the initial outline (assessment 2) you need to adjust your document incorporating the constructive criticisms received. Your plan should address and critically assess the following:

 

1)      A justification for the methodology and philosophical stance, in terms of the research problem and include a short background to the research and the research questions/propositions

2)      The data gathering plan, including the unit of analysis and subjects or sources of data, for example, explicit reference to steps such as deciding the population, the sampling frame and the sample, and the sample size, all justified using contemporary methodology literature.

3)      Students must show familiarity with controversies and positions taken by authors in the field/discipline

4)      The instruments and/ or procedures used to collect data and their justification

5)      Validity and reliability issues and how they are addressed

6)      Proposed method of data analysis and their justification

7)      Computer programs used to analyse the data, with justifications for their use

8)      The limitations and delimitations of the methodology

9)      Ethical issues

10)   Dissemination plan

 

Please note: It is acceptable to use ‘I’ in the methodology chapter so as to reflect an awareness that the researcher cannot be independent of the field data. It may be advisable that a qualitative researcher briefly describes themselves in the validity and reliability section, as a way of trying to make themselves and the reader aware of values that may bias their findings.
