6-8 page essay (for the novel paper) addressing one major theme in regard to postcolonial and/or feminist identity and power. Each essay should have a clear thesis statement in the first paragraph, and should remain focused on that issue throughout the paper. Use examples from the novel (or short story) to illustrate your claim. Research is welcome, but not required. Remember, less than 30% of your essay should consist of outside material. If you use research, you are welcome to incorporate portions of the theoretical texts assigned for this class, as well as additional materials.

Some additional notes:
• Stay in present tense when talking about events in the novel
• Introduce quotes by telling us which character is speaking. Don’t just drop quotes into your essay.

• Explain your point, give an example (quote), and explain how that example supports your point.
In the novel, Erdrich illustrates how the Native American characters are not just individuals, but one family, one people. For instance, in the first line of the novel, Nanapush says, “We started dying before the snow, and like the snow, we continued to fall” (Erdrich 1). Consequently, even in death, the Native American people bond together and share in their grief.
• No ellipses at beginnings or endings of quotations. Just use them in the middle to illustrate words that you left out of the quote.
