“The work-leisure dichotomy is a creation of western industrialisation. Leisure in terms of a state of mind occurs through experiences and reflection on those experiences. Leisure therefore CAN exist outside of western industrialised societies and in times that may be considered ‘work’. Therefore, Leisure CAN co-exist with work or without it..”

Introduction

 

‘The concept of ‘Leisure’ has been increasingly considered by academics and researchers over the past 100 years (REFERENCE)…Leisure is considered to have key benefits – it provides avenues for socialisation (REFERENCE), for physical health benefits (REFERENCE), and for psychological benefits (REFERENCE). Specifically, leisure and recreation have been seen as ways to recharge the mind and body, in order to remain effective and productive at work (REFERENCE)….

….This point raises an interesting issue – if a key role of leisure is to recharge us and rejuvenate us for work, then can leisure, as we know it, exist without work? This paper contends that leisure, in the form we are familiar with, cannot exist without the context of work to provide it meaning. It outlines the dominant definitions of leisure and highlights that freedom of choice, an essential factor of leisure, is only applicable outside of a work context. Similarly it provides an historical overview of the creation of the work-leisure dichotomy in Western society that is so critical to the tenet of this paper. Finally, it compares leisure in other societies and cultures to highlight that leisure, in the form and function we know it as, is a western social creation.’

 

Defining Leisure

 

‘There are numerous definitions of leisure. For example Neulinger, (1974,p 67) defines leisure as; ‘xxxxxxxxxxxx’ This definition focuses on the critical role that ‘free time’ plays in an activity, period or behaviour being classified as ‘leisure’. Similarly,   etc etc etc…’

 

The work-leisure dichotomy and industrialisation

‘Historically, the creation of what we view as ‘leisure’ may be seen as beginning with the birth of the Industrial Revolution, in the UK during the 18^th century (REFERENCE). Prior to this time…. etc etc,,,,, ‘

 

 

Other societies

 

‘However, it should be noted that whilst the work-leisure dichotomy we know is an obvious production of industrialisation and capitalist application of labour markets, the concept of leisure may exist outside of a western context. For example, consider Buddhism. The aesthetic and religious contemplation engaged by Buddhist monks may be viewed as consistent with many of the components of leisure as defined in western society (REFERENCE). Does, however, the fulfilment of religious duties constitute leisure? Does it not go against the basic tenet of ‘freedom of choice’ as defined by Gunter (1982)?   ……..etc etc “

 

Conclusion

 

 

‘It is apparent the leisure is indeed a multi-faceted and complex construct. Leisure is individual, it is viewed differently by different individuals and may be seen as a state of mind for many (REFERENCE). However, leisure is also a construction of western civilisation and social progression throughout the ages. It embodies core features that are specific to western culture and, more specifically, reflect the clear distinction that is held in Western societies between what is work, and what is leisure…

 

This paper has demonstrated that work and leisure are opposite poles of a continuum. It has presented evidence that leisure is a western creation, etc etc…

 

However, components of life and lifestyle from other cultures also show elements of leisure, based on a western perspective. Accordingly, it is argued that whilst leisure is a wider construct, distinct to work, that ‘leisure-like’ elements of life and lifestyle, may indeed be universal…’

 

 

OK – that gives a pretty detailed overview of HOW to write an academic University-grade essay. Of course, there are other ways to do a paper, and the focus of your argument can be modified, or changed based on your position, but this gives a pretty good general overview..
