Nurse Practitioner Professional Goals

Nurse Practitioner (NP) job is one that does not change quite often, continuous growth and improving our skills will help us be proficient in what we do, and increase our job satisfaction. To be able to grow, we have to set realistic goals. Specifically, this paper is called to represent my personal short and long-term goals, provide a critical overview of the professional career development, and reveal an efficient plan that will help me to achieve the noticeable results.
First of all, in the aspect of short-term goals, my last day of class in November 13 and I’m planning to take my NP certification by February 2017. My first short-term goal is to obtain my NP certification by the end of February 2017. I’m in my last class of the program and at the same time, I have started an intensive review for my certification. Secondly, I would like to get my first job as an NP in a family practice clinic by August 2016. I want to give myself six months to get my first job as NP. I hope to get it sooner; I have talked to many NP and was told by the majority that their first real job came through after 6 months of graduation. I’m sure my first job experience will be rather precious for my professional development. Thirdly, I am giving myself two years to feel at ease at my position. My last short-term goal is to become more proficient on my practice and gain self-confidence by the end of year 2018.
As for the long-term goals, my first one is to return to Walden University and earn a doctorate of nursing practice by December of 2019; such degree will serve as a powerful instrumental tool in my research career. Moreover, I would like to own a family clinic as an NP in my community by June of 2020. That will not only help me achieve a personal fulfillment but also have a tremendous impact on my community in the sense that I will be taking care of families, friends and neighbors. I will help manage their chronic diseases while improving health promotion and disease prevention. Lastly, I want to become a well-educated researcher by December 2020. My goal as a researcher is to assure the improvement of the management, implementation and evidence-based practice of an effective patient care.
Health promotion and disease prevention is dearest to me. I want to go out there and promote healthy living to the population. I became an NP because I felt like that was one way to get close to people and educate them about evidence based lifestyle recommendations. I selected these goals because they will promote the favorable opportunities for me following my graduation. My short-term goals are the basic need of my profession as an NP. I want to pass ***
My strategies plans included sharing my goals with family and friends to get all the support that I need. I will write down my goals, visualize periodically and make sure they are doable. I will stay positive and focus. Reward myself after each accomplishment. I will go to a review class and make enough time to study. Send out multiples application for job and make myself available for any position as new grad. I will go back to school as planned and focus on my doctorate in nursing (DNP), and once I get my DNP, I will focus on being a researcher.
The strategic plan that will help me to succeed is to stay focus and positive. I am sure that such steps will bring the positive results in the nearest perspective.

Self-Assessment of Nurse Practitioner Clinical Skills
I consider myself to have the following strengths: Patience, an excellent listener and compassionate. I take the time to listen to my patients and give them room to express themselves, as consider them as people in need of my services. I strive to be compassionate and empathize. I believe that this is strength since it builds confidence and trust between the patient and me they feel I care for them. To maintain patience, I take yoga classes so I can be centered at all times. My second strength is I play by the rules. I believe it is important in my duty as an NP to abide by the standards of the board and the practice. I consider this as strength since it ensures that I make the right choices. To maintain this, I read the Texas requirements regarding NP profession and licensure. My last and final strength are I maintain good ethical standards. I consider this an advantage since it protects the interests of all the stakeholders. To keep this, I often review the board’s code of conduct.
It would only be right to admit that I have some limitations in my practice; some of the restrictions are inclusive of the fact that I am poor at time management. I tend to spend too much time with patients, which lives me with inadequate time to attend to other errands. Nonetheless, I have been working on this by talking to physicians and other NPs to get input on how the overcome that weakness and manage time efficiently. My other weakness is I tend to think like a nurse and not a provider continuously. An NP has the duty of producing comprehensive treatment to the patient while the NR prepares the patient to see the doctor. To think more as an NP, I need to focus more on treatment for the patient and focus less on preliminary medical screening. My final weakness is that I do not have reasonable expectations of my performance. In the instances where my preceptor presents me with a question I cannot answer, I feel depressed and lose my confidence, nonetheless, I aware that with time I will amass more knowledge. I intend to have reasonable expectations.
To enhance my career, there are certain skills that I need to learn. There are inclusive of Suturing Skills; I will master the skill by taking advantage of any opportunity to learn. I will order suture kits and learn via videos. I intend to watch and assist physicians where I can. To add onto this, I will volunteer in ED and mainly follow physician doing suture. The second skill is EKG and X-ray interpretation. I will practice as much as possible at my clinical site. I will find reputable online EKG/X-ray reading website and practice regularly. I will also enroll in live courses for more practice and mastering of skills. The final skills are superficial abscess incision and drainage. I will master the skill through volunteering to follow physician in ER and OR. I will go to reputable sites and watch procedures. Finally, I will research on live classes offering NP skills attend.
The origin can be traced back to the post nurses that worked in areas Northwest Territories. Dr. Loretta Ford and Dr. Henry Silver develop the first Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Colorado in 1965. The program focuses on family health, disease prevention and the promotion of health. Since then, there were resistances at first from the physician and also from nurses. As time went on, NP became a more valuable and essential part of healthcare and they began to work for economic and professional acknowledgment. (AANP, 2016). The scope of practice varies throughout the country by state. Today, there are more than 192,000 NPs in the United States.
An emerging role of adult-gerontology nurse practitioner (AGNP) is focusing treatment on adolescents to adults, to the advanced age. As an AGNP, I will focus my treatment plan on health prevention and promotion. The contribution that I intend to introduce to advance the nursing profession is holistic treatment. I am passionate about holistic, and I believe not all conditions needs to be treated with medication. I will be a member of Professional organizations and associations, that will allow me to provide ideas, be proactive and participate in decision that need to maintain a healthy profession that advocates for the needs of its clients and nurses, and the trust of society (Matthews, 2012).
