Case Study
Marvin a white man, and Charlie his Latino partner, have just been approved to adopt to a 4-week old mixed race baby girl. However Marvin’s sister, who is a stay at home mother and who was stated to provide day care, backed out of their arrangement. Her husband did not believe gay men could adopt a baby, which is why he agreed to it. But now he does not want her to take care of any “half black baby.” Charlie is only out to select people at work and nervous about being outed. He may need to take family leave to provide child care for a while, and he fears losing his job if he takes too much time off. Marvin is looking for ways to supplement their income, if Charlie loses his job can you work effectively with this couple? Have you explored your own homophobia, what are some strategies you would use to assist these clients?
