“In this brief research paper you will examine the effects of socioeconomic status on development. You will do this by responding to four questions on socioeconomic status. The four questions are:

1. What factors other than income are used by psychologists and other social scientists to measure or determine socioeconomic status? Cite research, using APA Documentation format, that lists the factors most often used to measure socioeconomic status.

2. What specific aspects of development (social, physical and cognitive) are affected by socioeconomic status? Be sure to discuss effects of SES on each and cite supporting research. Be specific. Use quotes, statistics and graphs when possible. Avoid generalities. You may need to supplement the text with other research on socioeconomic effects. Be sure to cite the primary source, not Feldman, which is the secondary source when citing sources from the text.

3. Be sure to discuss at least one study that finds an unexpected or positive effect associated with lower socioeconomic status. For example

some studies have found that those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are better able to empathize with others than those of higher socioeconomic status. Are there advantages associated with not growing up with privilege and if so what are they?

4. Feldman states that the rate of poverty is higher in the United States than other industrialized countries and that the trend is for the poverty rate to grow even higher in the U.S. Discuss why the rate is higher in the U.S. and what other countries are doing to lower their poverty rate. Pick one of these strategies used by other countries to reduce poverty, that you think would also be effective in reducing poverty here in the United States. Do you think the current political trends will allow that strategy to work here? Be sure to cite research supporting these ideas and end with a summary and conclusion statement.

Though you will be responding to 4 different questions, try to make the paper cohesive. The answers should be organized and written as an APA paper. Each section of the paper will respond to a different question. Be sure to make the language of the assignment formal, as you would any research paper and use complete sentences and organize the sentences into separate paragraphs where necessary. Also be sure to provide intext citations for information you present that is not original to you. Avoid using opinions unless they can be supported by research. Remember, this is a science course and as such this paper should review and discuss the research on these questions and not your opinions.
