Paper requirements: all parts and questions need to be addressed per paper requirements.

Book to be referenced chapters 9-10“Cornerstones of Coaching” by Jon J. Hammermeister 2010. 

Paper requirements: While most coaches focus on sports skills, Chapters 9-10 evaluate the importance of incorporating mental training into sport.  After completing the mental toughness survey (results below), write a paper that addresses each component assessed.  Begin the paper by summarizing your own results.  Next, break down each area (reboundability, pressure, concentration, confidence, and motivation) and discuss how you address each of these areas with your players.  What do you do to enhance each area and/or assist athletes who have difficulties in these areas?  Have at least one paragraph for each area.  Conclude your paper with your thoughts regarding mental training.  Do you incorporate mental training into your practices?  Why or why not?  If so, is it effective?  What advice do you have for coaches who are considering adding mental training to their practices?  This paper should be 3-5 pages double-spaced.  Students are encouraged to refer to Chapters 9-10 of the course text.  Feel free to use any other resources that may support your writing.  Refer to the evaluation rubric for papers to see how this paper will be graded.

Poor concentration is the major reason why athletes choke and get stuck in performance slumps. Getting psyched out or intimidated is a direct result of concentrating on the wrong things.

One characteristic of the mentally tough athlete is he/she possesses a confidence level that seems to be unshaken by setbacks and failures. Under the pressure of competition, low confidence will neutralize natural ability, hard work and talent. Similarly, high confidence will enhance an athlete’s training and God-given talents, lifting their performance to the next level.

Motivation is the fuel that will drive your training to a successful completion and the accomplishment of your goals. Without adequate motivation athletes get stuck having “permanent potential.” Without motivation you won’t put in the work necessary to become a winner. Your motivation allows you to pick yourself up after a setback and keep going.
