What were some of the influences of the new radical democracy of ancient Greece (circa 550 – 5 BC) upon the theatre of ancient Greece, but also, upon Euripides play Medea? The Rehm readings “The Performance Culture of Athens” and the “The Theatre of Dionysus” are most pertinent to this question. (Use in text referencing; author and page number in brackets, only.)

Medea has killed at least five people by the plays end, her brother, the king and his daughter and her own two children, however, the audience are made to feel sympathy for Medea (and not Jason), in spite of these murders. Read Medea’s speech which begins, “As a man you’re the worst there is—that’s all…” (The speech follows these reference numbers in the text: 550-620 circa). In your answer, identify (write out) the lines (run-on lines are fine also) from the speech which support Medea’s argument — that she is in the right and justified in what she is about to do — and that create audience sympathy for Medea. Put an astrisk next to three of the lines you have chosen and say why these lines in particular are most significant in convincing the audience to sympathise with Medea. (When writing out the lines keep the formatting of the play, in other words, give a new line to the words in the speech where they are given a new line in the play. No referencing necessary).

In Drama/Theatre/Performance Sheperd and Wallis state that ‘the person of modern … tragedy is … complex, … internally divided and shaped by circumstances” (page 26, “Modern Tragedy: Bradley”). Discuss Li’l Bit as such a person (character). (For referencing, use in text referencing; author and page number only).
