Comparing and Contrasting

Comparing and Contrasting

In Week 2 we proposed a topic for our final papers and began thinking about potential causes. This week we turn our attention to complicating our understanding about the issues and the questions raised by beginning the research process. To ease us into the research process, we will first perform a less formal compare and contrast assignment. Later this week, we will submit the Library Assignment (we recommend skipping ahead and reading about what it entails), which will ask us to perform library research to both learn how to perform research for academic purposes, and to also search for answers to some of the questions we have discovered through the writing process thus far.

Assignment Guidelines:

By Saturday, February 2, 2013 post initial responses to the Discussion Area. All responses should be posted in the Discussion Area. We expect that you read all lecture materials and textbook chapters before completing this discussion assignment, as these materials will prepare you to complete the work successfully. If you have reviewed all of these materials and still have questions, don’t hesitate to contact your instructor with specific questions prior to submitting the assignment.

Assignment Requirements

Complete all 4 steps:

1). Choose either the one-side-at-a-time method or the side by side method to organize your compare/contrast analysis (see lecture “Comparing and Contrasting”) Please note that you will likely find that there are more than two or three “points” for each perspective under Subjects “A”and “B.” The example is shortened for illustrative purposes only.

Your analysis could (and probably should) have more than just two to three points for each “side.”

2 ). Present the analysis in structured outline form: One-Side-At-A-Time Method or Point-by-Point Method

One-Side-At-A-Time Method

3). Document two sources that helped you complete this compare/contrast outline and cite each of them using APA conventions as best you can (see the APA lectures and consult your texts). For this assignment the sources do not necessarily have to come from the SUO library (although we recommend using these databases).

4). Finally, and in addition to the points you have discovered by completing the compare/contrast assignment, share at least one significant thing you learned about your topic through reading each of the two sources.

this is the essay i have to write comparing and contrasting about

Unemployment is one of the most popular economic issues that face societies. This is because of its significance in determining people’s ability to meet their needs. Significance of unemployment is also evident in its effect on social and political aspects of the society. This paper proposes a discussion of unemployment as a significant problem in Miami, Dade, Florida. The issue meets the criteria for discovering problems by its existence as a real life issue that face members of the society and by existence of information about its prevalence.

The issue of unemployment in Miami is a significant problem that residents identify with. The local people experience it, either in them or in people around them. Research centers have also published information on the problem to facilitate awareness. A time series data for example illustrate a steady rise of unemployment rates in the city in the year 2009 and a peak of almost 13 percent in the 2010. The experience and existing data therefore means that people are aware of the problem and can reasonably agree on its existence (Federal, p. 1)

The issue is significant because economics, in resource generation and allocation, is fundamental to peoples’ ability to meet their needs. Unemployment however means lack of resources to meet such needs and has adverse consequences such as poor quality of life and education.

The issue of unemployment in Miami is of particular interest to me because I have been in the city and understands consequences of unemployment in the environment. I therefore propose exploration of two questions; ‘what are the root causes of trend in unemployment in Miami?’, and ‘how can these factors be detected and managed?’ An exploration of the problem and the two questions will develop insights towards informed policy making to control unemployment rates.
