(For questions 1 and 2 – and, to some extent, 3 – the following collection will prove useful: Curran, J. and Gurevitch, M. (eds) (2005) Mass Media and Society, London: Hodder Arnold, 4th edition.

The question requires engagement with the debate between neoliberals and political economists concerning the commercial media sector as a ‘marketplace of ideas’. You will need to outline each approach. You then need to give specific attention to processes of media conglomeration and concentration. Evidence about these processes should then be at the core of your argument concerning whether contemporary developments in ownership and control support either side of the debate.

The chapter by Downing will be particularly useful for outlining the debate. Hesmondhalgh (2007) is a useful source, as is Curran (2005). See the contributions of the political economists Garnham and Murdoch to the debate. Murdock and Golding (in Curran and Gurevitch, 2005) present a strong case for the political economy position.
