CONTENT GUIDELINES

You must compare and contrast two world religions with a view toward ethical teachings. You must select one religion from each group below:

Group 1
Hinduism
Jainism
Buddhism
Daoism
Confucianism
Shinto

Group 2
Judaism
Christianity
Islam

Note: you must pick only 1 religion from Group 1 and only 1 religion from Group 2. This means, for example, that you could not compare Christianity with Islam or Buddhism with Hinduism.

You must treat the ethical teachings of each religion. Often there is common ground between religions—do not neglect to point this out. It is also important to show how each religion has a distinct ethical outlook.

1. Identify ethical principles and ethical values that each religion emphasizes. For example, some religions emphasize not hurting other living organisms.
2. Pick an ethical issue to help draw a comparison or contrast between the two outlooks. For example, capital punishment, euthanasia, abortion, affirmative action, gender equality, animal rights, environmental protection, etc. are issues you may use. You may use only one moral issue for your comparison.
3. For your conclusion: evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each viewpoint. Imagine that a competent representative of each religion was reading your evaluation and try to anticipate how s/he would respond to your critique.
Give reasons for your position.
4. Embody ethical values in your essay. Be fair-minded and show respect to each religion by making a diligent effort to understand each on its own terms. Be precise, detailed, and thorough. Feel free to strongly disagree with one or both—but always be respectful and write with an appropriate narrative voice. Avoid a superficial conclusion.
5. Feel free to use our course textbook as one of your sources. You must use a minimum of three traditional books and three electronic resources (websites or e-Books). Do not use Wikipedia. The online Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is useful for ethical issues and ethical theories.

Here is a sample structure for the essay:

Initially state that the essay is going to treat Buddhism and Christianity (in that order.)

Part I:

The ethical teachings of Buddhism that flow from its main teachings

Part II:
The ethical teachings of Christianity that flow from its main teachings

Part III:

A contrast and comparison of Buddhist and Christian responses to the issue of morally justified war. (Note: be careful not to assume that there is a single “Christian” stance or a single “Buddhist” stance. Be sensitive to the diversity within these world religions. For example, not all Christians agree on the topic of morally justified war.)

Part IV:

Evaluate the strengths and/or weaknesses of the ethical teachings of each.
For example, you could conclude that both Christianity and Buddhism promote pacifism. Alternatively, you could conclude that Christianity provides a better justification for war (when moral conditions are met) than Buddhism. Give reasons for your position.

Part V: Bibliography (an example)

You must utilize 6 resources (3 printed books) at a minimum

1. The course textbook
2. A book on Buddhist ethics
3. A book on Christian ethics
4. A book on ethics and violence
5. A book on the morality of war (just war theory)
6. A book on the history of war

Reminder: Use footnotes as needed throughout your essay. It is essential that your work contain a bibliography and footnotes. Hint: the textbook lists many helpful websites/links at the end of each chapter.

A sample of a title page and some other parts of your essay will be provided in Unit 6. Check out the sample before submitting the final version of your essay.

The essay is due April 7th at 11:55 pm EST. Submit your paper electronically by uploading it in Angel. (If you have trouble uploading it, then email your essay to me as an attachment).
