Violence vs. Ideology:
In Leviathan Hobbes argues, “Covenants without the sword are but words, and of no strength to secure man at all.” Without the threat of physical violence, suggests Hobbes, subjects will not obey and a state of war will persevere. Althusser, on the other hand, believes that violence is not powerful enough to secure our obedience. Rather, ideology is just as, if not more important, to maintaining (capitalist) domination. In other words, Althusser suggests that institutions like the school are just as powerful as the police and the military.
Who is right—Hobbes or Althusser? Is ideology more powerful than violence? In order to formulate a successful essay, consider the following questions:
• How do ideological state apparatuses like the school secure obedience?
• What is the difference between the way the school secures obedience and the way the police or military secures obedience?
• Which are more effective in securing obedience—the ideological institutions of society or the violent institutions? Why?
