2. Consider the following before answering the 2 questions below:
You are sitting on a Congressional Committee to determine ways to cut federal spending. The focus is on programs for children with special needs, as many have argued that this is wasteful spending. You are tasked with writing a brief to your fellow committee members with your recommendations. This document will finally make its way to the President’s desk for consideration on spending cuts. This is an important issue to you, as you have a younger sibling with special needs.
Consider both sides of the issue, and the impact on the families, children, and society if these programs are cut or preserved. Please note, you don’t have to actually write a brief for this paper, only answer the 3 questions below.
3. Answer the following 2 questions (short answers required for each):
a. What are some of the issues Sociologists face when trying to be value free in their research? (2-3 paragraphs).
Why did Weber think this was necessary? What was his argument? Is objectivity possible? Can you be value free in your own work on the Committee? Why/why not? (3-4 paragraphs)
b. Read the section on Karl Marx and Conflict Theory. This theory believes that people are in competition with each other for limited resources. How can this theory help you understand the task you have to complete? Be specific. Maybe it can help you understand/frame the issue. Perhaps it can help you understand the perspectives of the congress members who handed you the task, or the families and children who stand to lose funding, or society that is asking the government to redirect spending to other programs.
