The formula used for calculating the centripetal acceleration, ac, for an object moving in a circle of radius r with instantaneous or constant speed ‘v’ is:

a(subscript c) = v/t = v^2/r

A second formula often used to find the centripetal acceleration can be easily derived with basic kinematics and a substitution.

The tangential speed (if held constant) can be calculated using v = d/t. The distance, d, around a circle is the circle’s circumference do d = 2r. Therefore we get v = 2r/t. Since “t” represents the time it takes to go ONCE around a circle, we call this the Period, T to get:

v= 2r / T

Substituting this expression into our formula for a(c) gives:

a(subscript c) = v^2/r = ( 2r /T)^2/r = 4^2r^2/T^2/r= 4^2r/T^2

OR use this.

a(subscript c) = 4^2r/ T^2
