Testing and Measurement: Different types of tests can provide different kinds of information. In this
Section, learners will examine norm-referenced and criterion referenced tests and their value in regard to
making educational decisions. Classroom tests, performance based, and portfolio assessments and the data they
contribute to meeting educational objectives are essential to the education process. The types of assessment
chosen are based on different philosophies of education just as the design and development are.
Implementation plans must include consideration for diverse learners, multiculturalism, student achievement,
data for improvement, reliability and validity, student motivation and emotions, and appropriate ways to
provide feedback, how you motivate students to prepare and not frighten or upset them, and how you would
provide feedback.

Issues and Trends: Achievement, Standards, and High Stakes Testing
The No Child Left Behind Act (2001) has had a huge impact on schools, districts, and states. Some of the
consequences of the law were not anticipated, and the students the law was created to help may have actually
been hurt by this legislation. In this Section, learners will examine some of the consequences, both positive
and negative, to increased accountability.

assessments best captured your content mastery? Now consider the tests required from students today. How
might these tests accurately reflect our students? knowledge and ability?

Investigating Testing and Measurement

In this activity, you will have the chance explore testing and measurement used in schools. With the advent
of No Child Left Behind, high stakes tests grew in importance for students, teachers, and administration.
Educators must be sure that all students succeed and that tests and measurements are accurate, valid, and
reliable. You will also explore different types of assessments available to gauge student content mastery.

1. Evaluate the extent to which you would use each type of test in your hypothetical (or actual)
classroom and justify your choices.
2. Propose your plan for assessment, include the philosophical theory(ies) it is based on, the reasons
why the assessments you choose are appropriate for diverse students, and why your students will improve
achievement through these assessments.
3. In your plan consider how you would ensure the instruments you use are valid and reliable, how you
motivate students to prepare and not frighten or upset them, and how you would provide feedback.
Support your paper with a minimum of three (3) scholarly sources. In addition to these specified resources,
other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.
