Air Pollution, Race, and Income-Environmental Justice
Air Pollution, Race, and Income-Environmental Justice
Choose one state and provide a quantitative analysis of the distribution of air pollution in that state by income or race (choose only 1). The unit of analysis will be the counties in the state, so choose a state with enough counties with data to make a case. You may approach this problem using one or more of several perspectives:
1. Tabular: Provide tables of the data that make an argument about the distribution of exposures.
2. Geographic: Map the incidence of air pollution, as indicated in the dataset, by plotting the rank of monitoring sites (in air quality) on top of the included demographic data.
3. Graphical: Graph the data in a way that illuminates one or more of the relationships within the state.
4. Statistics: Provide a statistical measure of the distribution of pollution in that state. The best measure to use here would be a “non-parametric” measure of correlation, like the Spearman Rank Correlation. If using Excel, it may be simplest to do straightforward correlation analysis. More advanced students of statistics may wish to use regression with several independent variables.
