short story and novel
1. Readings: Introduction to chapter 2 and all three stories — Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants,” and Moore’s “How.” (pp. 96 – 118).
2. Choose two of the three stories and write a brief essay (500 words) discussing how each author uses point of view to advance each story. Make sure you start out stating from which point of view your two stories are told. Think about what is gained and/or lost by choosing to tell the story in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person. What is revealed and what isn’t revealed? Why? How is suspense created through point of view and how do the author’s relay information? Think of this is a compare/contrast essay between the two stories and their points of view. Make sure you draw from examples and quotes from the texts to support your points.
Now that you have chosen the book you will read and research for your final project, you should have started reading it. At this point, you should have an idea of the issues raised in the book and what aspect you might want to focus on in your paper. This is a good time to construct a thesis statement so that you have a starting point for your paper and a way for your ideas to start taking shape.
The thesis statement is arguably the most important sentence in an essay because it clearly and concisely tells your readers what the paper is essentially about. Here are some tips to consider while writing your thesis statements:
1. Be clear: The thesis statement is your opportunity to clearly communicate to your readers what your paper is about. You don’t want to leave any room for confusion, so just come out and say on what topic you will be writing.
2. Be specific: Rather than saying, “This paper is about the Statue of Liberty,” specifically indicate what about the Statue of Liberty you will be writing. For example, is it about the history of the Statue of Liberty? Is it about the symbolism of the Statue of Liberty? Make it known right away. “This essay discusses the history and symbolism of the Statue of Liberty and why it is such an important American monument.” This sounds much more specific!
Of course, this essay will be about literature, so here is an example of a specific thesis statement for a literary paper as it introduces the book, author, and issue discussed:
“In this essay, I argue that by reading Jean Rhys’s ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ through an ecofeminist lens, one can see the connection between the domination of nature and the domination of women by men.”
3. Be concise: While you want to be as clear and specific as possible, you also want to be concise and not load your readers down with too much information or too many words.
4. Be interesting: Since the thesis statement is your opportunity to tell your readers your topic, it is also your chance to grab their attention. Try to write your thesis in a way that is intriguing so that others are interested in your topic as well.
5. Introduce your topic and your position: You not only want to communicate what you’re writing about, but also why you’re writing about it. Why is this topic important to you? If you read my example in #2, you will see that “The Statue of Liberty” is the topic and “Why it is such an important American monument” is the position. Make sure both topic and position are clear. Likewise, Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea is the topic, and analyzing it through an ecofeminist lens is the position (or the focus).
