INSTRUCTIONS FOR CULTURAL COMPARISON ASSIGNMENT #2
Read the text book chapters (also on D2L) listed below carefully. Each chapter presents a very distinctive cultural group and their architecture and building styles. In this assignment, you will be doing a comparison of their architecture.

 
THREE ETHNIC GROUPS
1. South-Western Hispanics (pp. 92-99)
2. Belgians (pp.100-105)
3. Midwestern Germans (pp. 142-147)
1) Pick a particular type of building that is discussed in all three chapters and then compare it across the three cultural groups. The building type should have a common purpose or use in all three groups (i.e. a house or a farm building).
2) When writing the comparison, focus on the following aspects. Compare both similarities and differences of:
? Building materials used in the building
? Location/region of this building type in the U.S. and how that location, environment and
climate had influenced the architecture
? Prominent architectural features and their origins (where they came from and why)
? Social, cultural, and/or religious aspects that influenced the building type
? Any other aspects you find as important to compare
For each bullet point above, you need to compare all three cultures.
3) After you compared the three groups, what are your thoughts on these topics? What can the similarities and/or differences tell you about these three groups? What did you find as interesting/surprising/didn’t know before/did know but found out more information/did not like/not that interesting/etc.? Describe these in details; this section needs some attention beyond simply stating it was interesting.
