What is it about communism that frightened people so terribly during this time?

During the 60s and 70s, governments in the West were terrified of the Soviet Union and communism. The West, led by the U.S. fought communism everywhere. In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh led an uprising against the colonial French government. He came to the West and the U.S. and asked for their help. He even wanted to use the U.S. Declaration of Independence as his model for his new government. The U.S. rejected him because France was an ally. Ho Chi Minh then turned to the Soviet Union and China for help thus becoming a communist. Should we have handled this differently? How? What is it about communism that frightened people so terribly during this time? Doesn’t communism have some qualities that are good and acceptable for society? If so, what? Are all of their ideas terrible? Fear tends to make people and governments make emotional, thereby, poor decisions. What do we fear today nationally or internationally that could cause us to make poor emotional decisions that could explode in our faces like Vietnam did? Why do you believe this?
