Poetry, Symbolism, and Drama (Pick 2)
Your final project will be to write 2 out of 3 separate essays which examine poetry, symbolism, and drama from the options listed below. There is some extensive research which goes along with completing this project so you should have started this project during week 2 in order to accomplish all tasks. You will write 2 essays which run between 650-750 words each. You will complete each essay as a separate entity and turn in both essays independently from one another. Please title your essay by the assignment name followed by the selection you made for each section. For example, Analyzing Theme in Fiction: Glass Menagerie. Please see the following instructions for each essay.

Analyzing Characters in Fiction
Assignment Description:
You will write a 650-750 word essay that analyzes the purpose of a character or characters in a short story of your selection. You may single out a character or write about two characters from the same work or different works. Your essay must use quotes and/or paraphrases from the piece to support your analysis; all such citations must include parenthetical references, and your essay must include a Reference page, even if your only source is the story you are referencing. Consider the following questions (when applicable) in your analysis:
• How does the author describe this character? What qualities are emphasized? What does the character say and how does he or she say whatever is said? Is the character dynamic or static?
• What role does the character play in advancing the plot?
• How does the character relate to other characters? What do the characters say about each other?
• What do you think the author wanted to convey with this character?
• Does the character represent a group of people, a particular type of person, or anything else (such as an idea, a belief system, etc.)? If so, what is the author saying about what the character represents?

1. In order to demonstrate critical analysis of a text, you must:
a.Analyze a character insightfully and thoroughly.
b.Use textual evidence to support your judgments.
2. In order to demonstrate your ability to write a cohesive argument, you must:
•Write an essay with a clearly stated thesis.
•Write an essay that is organized into coherent paragraphs,
• including an introduction and conclusion.
3. In order to follow the conventions of academic writing:
•Properly cite your sources using APA style and write an essay that is free of spelling, grammatical, and mechanical errors.

Analyzing Symbolism in Poetry
Assignment Description: You will write a 650-750 word essay that analyzes symbolism in one or more poems of your choice. Your essay must use quotes and/or paraphrases from the poem(s) to support your analysis; all such citations must include parenthetical references, and your essay must include a Reference page, even if there is only one source listed. Consider the following questions (when applicable) in your analysis:
• What images, descriptions, or objects seem significant?
• What might those images, descriptions, or objects represent beyond their apparent literal meanings?
• Why do you think the poet chose these particular symbols?
• What overall effect does the use of symbolism have on the poem and its meaning?

Analyzing Theme in Fiction
Assignment Description: You will write a 650-750 word essay that analyzes one or more themes in any of the plays provided below. Your essay must use quotes and/or paraphrases from the play to support your analysis; all such citations must include parenthetical references, and your essay must include a Reference page. I encourage you to also use research from scholarly sources to support your analysis where appropriate. Consider the following questions (when applicable) in your analysis:
• Are there any lessons or concepts it seems the author wants the reader to learn or consider?
• How do the elements of the drama support these lessons/concepts? What techniques does the playwright use to reveal them?
• What alternative readings are possible that might be offered alongside of or as challenges to your reading? How can you support your own interpretation against or in light of those?

1. In order to demonstrate critical analysis of a drama, you must:
• Make judgments and critical observations of a drama with particular attention to its thematic overtones.
• Use evidence from that drama to support your judgments.
• You are free to include references to other scholarly sources about the work or the playwright to help support your point. Whether you choose to find outside sources to support your argument or not, your interpretation must be well-defended and thoroughly supported with quotes and paraphrases from the text.
2. In order to demonstrate your ability to write a cohesive argument, you must:
• Write an essay with a clearly stated thesis.
• Write an essay that is organized into coherent paragraphs, including an introduction and conclusion.
• Write an essay that adequately supports your points with examples and solid reasoning.
3. In order to follow the conventions of academic writing, you must:
