THE MED CASE
[[[[[A middle-aged woman is seen in a gynecology clinic by a resident and you, a medical student. Routine pelvic examination by the resident reveals a vulvar lesion that could be a melanoma. The patient is cooperative until informed by the resident that she is about to do a biopsy of the lesion, at which point the patient becomes distraught and insists it not be done. The patient begins to cry when the resident informs her of the importance of the biopsy.
“I said I didn’t want it. Are you going to do it anyway?” the patient, still in stirrups asks. Then, the resident asks you to hold the patient’s hand, and you nod and comply. The resident continues and proceeds with the biopsy; however, the patient insists that the resident stop during the entire procedure.
