Affects of Combat PTSD on Sexual Intimacy

Affects of Combat PTSD on Sexual Intimacy

Using the two sources…
1. compare and contrasting the coverage;
2. discuss the relative merits of each; and
3. address which of the two approaches (scholarly or popular media) is better suited to disseminate information about your selected topic
First page should of course include introductory paragraph but also a summary of the article (i.e. article title, the article authors, the journal in which the article was published, the date of publication, and the focus of the research, how it was conducted and what were the results.)

Second page should include a summary of the second source (media coverage of the topic).

Third and fourth pages should include a comparion of the two sources
– What do they have in common?
– Other than visually, how are they most different?
– What is the value for consumers reading each?
– What are the cons associated with the way each presents the information?
– Both sources can be important means of communicating information about your topic. Explain what is best about the scholarly approach and why, and what is best about the popular media approach and why.
sources. I am looking for careful analysis of the primary sources. However, any secondary sources you nevertheless use must also be cited appropriately. Treat non-academic on-line sources with skepticism.)

C. Nevertheless, be sure to describe all positions in your own words. Explain and defend your understanding of all quoted material (i.e., don’t just parrot phrases from one of our texts when alternative interpretations are possible, as they usually are).

D. Because of the short page limit, you will need to get right to the point. Vague, rambling introductions should be scrapped in favor of a concise statement of your argument.

E. An excellent paper will compellingly present intelligent, creative thinking in a clear and elegant style. It will have a significant, insightful central argument that is appropriately complex, according to the topic and page limit, and which supports a precisely articulated, significant thesis. It will not simply report opinions or subjective feelings, but instead provide compelling reasons for its conclusions. It will anticipate and respond to possible counter-arguments. It will go beyond and/or take issue with points made in class, rather than simply rehearsing ideas from the professor’s statements. It will be well-organized, and present sufficient textual evidence for its conclusions.

F. Give a descriptive title, and note explicitly on the title page which question you are answering. Please use page numbers. (All of this helps me grade the papers more efficiently.)

G. Choose one of the following questions to address in your paper. You are welcome to write on some other topic if you would like, but you must discuss and clear it with me by 5 p.m. on February 4th.
Questions (the rest are on the other side):

1. The early Chinese are sometimes described as engaging in “ancestor worship,” or perhaps more aptly, “ancestor veneration.” What is the role of concern for one’s ancestors (for example, through funerary and other rituals) in Confucius? In Mozi? Why did they think such behavior was necessary and good? What did they disagree about, and why? Evaluate the wisdom of their recommendations.

2. Compare and contrast the accounts of Heaven (tian ?), “fate” or the “decree” (ming ?), and ghosts/spirits, and the appropriate human attitudes to and relations with these phenomena, given by Confucius and Mozi. Briefly evaluate their accounts. (If you wish, you may focus on only two of the ideas to be compared.)

3. Analyze and evaluate Confucius’s self-understanding as described in the Analects. In particular, discuss his conception of himself as a transmitter rather than an innovator. What light do both modern history and traditional Chinese accounts of the past throw on his judgment? Defend your understanding.

4. Describe the ideal societies of Confucius and Mozi. What is it about them that makes them ideal? Which is better, and why?

5. Based on our readings from the Analects, what is de ? or “virtue” for Confucius? Do you think there really is such a thing? If so, is it an adequate foundation for a social system? Why or why not? Explain and defend your answer.

6. Why does Confucius think “filial piety” is so important? What does he mean by “filial piety” and how does it relate to the rest of his ideas, particularly ren ?? What would be the most trenchant criticism of his view of filial piety, and how might he respond?

7. What is Confucius’s view of the relation of virtue and profit? Is his view plausible? How does it compare with Mozi’s ideas about benefit? (The same Chinese word, li ?, is translated as both benefit and profit.) Who has the more profound understanding? Argue for one or the other (or your own view), anticipating and responding to relevant objections.

8. Is there any place for freedom (of thought, action, creativity) in Confucius’s system? Cite textual evidence. Evaluate and, if necessary, critique Confucius’s ideas with regard to freedom—are his views emancipatory or oppressive, or some sort of mix?

9. Describe the role of ritual in Confucius’s thought. Why is it so important to him? What are the most important strengths and weaknesses of his ideas?

10. How and why does Mozi critique Confucianism? Which are his most and least compelling arguments? If a capable Confucian were to respond to Mozi’s strongest arguments, what would he or she say?

11. Reconstruct and evaluate Mozi’s arguments in favor of “impartial caring;” you may in addition examine his advocacy of the “golden rule” as a basis for moral judgment. (See p. 69 of RCCP for Mozi’s formulation of the golden rule.) Consider and respond to possible counter-arguments to your position.

12. Imagine a debate between Confucius and Mozi on the topic of “impartiality and partiality.” Cite relevant passages from the texts, but feel free to develop their positions further in the course of the debate. With yourself as moderator, interject any other relevant points they fail to consider, and imagine how they might respond. Write a conclusion suggesting who got the better of the arguments and why.
