Aporia

Aporia

Aporia is an experience that affects us on many levels at once: discomfort and doubt. An aporia is a crisis of choice, of action and identity, and not only of belief. An aporia can be a feeling that one knows nothing or a feeling of not knowing what to think or say or do next. In other words, numbness and/or paralysis. There are other forms of aporia. For instance, a different kind of aporia is to have lost one’s way, to be confused because there are too many options from which to choose. Another kind of aporia is one in which one cannot recognize a path that is already there. Or, an aporia can be one in which the direction is apparent but one cannot or will not follow it because the destination is unknown or because it is known and unsettling. In each of these instances, one does not know how to go on, but for different reasons. Each requires a different response.

You are asked to write on concise aporia paper.

Your aporia paper could be based on a single issue stemming from the readings that caught your attention during your preparation for a class and its topic, or the merits of the perspectives discussed for the overall topic of the week. It should be comprised of your reactions and critical thinking regarding the issue(s) in the readings and the discussions during the previous class. For instance, you might want to compare and contrast the issues outlined in the readings with your experiences in the filed, or you may build onto or critique and idea introduced in the class, using some arguments supported by educational research and theory.

Write up your aporia paper. This should be a short paper (3-5 pages) that allows you to focus your thinking on the reading/topic/aporia. For this paper, prepare a thesis/position statement, which you will develop in an opening paragraph, and three or four supporting statements, each of which will be developed in its own paragraph and supported by evidence from the literature, discussion, and, if you wish, by your experiences. End the paper with a concluding paragraph that circles back to the original question and/or position statement. Your aporia paper does not have to resolve your question but evidence of exploration and consideration should be present. Please note: Don’t try to include everything in your paper: three pages double-spaced means you need to propound, reflect, and/or question one key point/question.
