avoidance responses extinguish
Instructions: This midterm is due on Friday, February 15th. Drop the paper off in my office or email it to me with a clear subject line indicating that it is the midterm for 112C.

Answer five (5) of the following questions. Everyone must answer questions 1 and 2. Choose any three of the remaining questions. Type you answers in 12-point font. DO NOT exceed one, single-spaced page for any given answer. Be sure to include your name and student ID when submitting your answers.

1. Why don’t avoidance responses extinguish? Discuss the question in terms of the problems it poses for Mowrer’s (1947) two-process theory of avoidance. How is the issue resolved by Soltysik’s research and theory on compound conditioned inhibition procedures?

2. Jacobs and Nadel (1985) distinguish between taxon and locale learning systems in their discussion of memory processing following psychological trauma. Why is this distinction important to an understanding of anxiety disorders?

3. Describe the GABA, benzodiazepine chloride ionophore. How is this ion channel activated by GABA, what are the consequences for excitatory transmission in the target neuron, and how do benzodiazepines alter GABA’s action?

4. Describe the James-Lange theory of emotion. How is this worked challenged by the work of Schachter and Singer (1962)? Are you convinced by their research?

5. Describe Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome. Include a description of the SAM and HPAC systems and their role in stress reactivity.

6. Compare and contrast panic disorder with PTSD in terms of their etiology, defining characteristics, treatment, and prognosis.

7. High levels of circulating CORT inhibit the brain’s neural response to stress by interfering with glucose uptake transport in hippocampal neurons. Robert Sapolski has argued that this feature of CORT’s action is likely to damage hippocampal tissue under chronic stress conditioning. Discuss how brain cholinergic transmission, ATP-sensitive K+ channels, and adenosine signaling protect against such damage.
