Domestic chickens may contract bird flu from the droppings of infected migrating birds.
As a precaution, free-range farmers across Europe have been forced to move their chickens indoors during migration times, which although necessary to prevent infection, may have serious implications for the welfare of the chickens.

Farmer James and his family run an organic farm in the UK and are particularly proud of the excellent welfare state of their free-range chickens.

The James? farm has therefore been selected as a demonstration unit to investigate methods for the prevention of infection from bird flu and the maintenance of high welfare standards for free-range laying hens in a temporary indoor enclosure.

Farmer James has received a grant and planning permission to convert existing buildings on his farm for this purpose.
