World Powers and Imperialism

The purpose of this paper is to give you an opportunity to think further about how world powers influenced the Modern Middle East, to deepen your understanding of the notion of imperialism, and to explore resistance to imperialism.  You will also cultivate your ability to focus on a purpose, to develop ideas thoroughly, and to analyze and synthesize appropriate sources.

In Traditions and Encounters, Jerry Bentley and Herb Ziegler write,

“ . . . imperialism refers to the domination of European powers—and later the United States and Japan as well—over subject lands in the larger world.  Sometimes this domination came in the old fashioned way, by force of arms, but often it arose from trade, investment, and business activities that enabled imperial powers to profit from subject societies and influence their affairs without going to the trouble of exercising direct political control” (page 910).

How have imperialist practices of world powers impacted economies and/or polities in the modern Middle East?

Support your answers with stories, events, statistics, etc. from Middle East History since 1500.

Draw on your reading of at least two of the following sources:  The Modern Middle East, Sowing Crisis, class documentaries, and class handouts.Be sure to cite the texts/documentaries you use, referencing page numbers as appropriate.

Please note:  you do not need to cover the entire history we have covered.  You can focus on any time period and any world power or area of the Middle East.  The paper is similar to a reflection paper in that you can choose which stories to focus on.  It is different than a reflection paper in that you will have a purpose (a point of view on the question above) and will strategically use examples to illustrate your point of view.

The papers should be at least 1200 words (approximately 4-5 pages in length, double-spaced) and will be evaluated for purpose, use of evidence, and organization.
