Assignment:
In the Module 2 Case, you will discuss the utilitarian ethics that apply to the following business problem. In doing so, you will apply the Utility Test and your choice of five additional tests in a critical analysis of the organizational problem. Finally, you will compare and contrast which of the tests you have chosen (if any) are most responsive to the business problem.
Keys to the Assignment:
In a 5-page paper, please address the following:
1) Specifically, what are the utilitarian ethics issues in this Case?
2) What would Jeremy Bentham, the father of utilitarianism, have said about this Case? How might Bentham’s suggestion that “We seek pleasure and the avoidance of pain…” apply here? Was Bentham right?
3) Apply Steps A through D of the Utility Test to the above case. Be sure that you carefully document each step in the process.
4) Choose one of the following five tests: Rights Test, Exceptions Test, Choices Test, Justice Test, or the Common Good Test. Click here: http://ethicsops.com/EthicsTestsLinks.aspx. Now, apply the test you’ve chosen to the above case. In your paper, be sure that you have fully written to each step in the test you have selected.
5) Compare and contrast the results you have obtained from the Utility Test (#1 above) and your choice of the five tests (#2 above). Which of the two tests do you believe is most informative, and why?
Assignment Expectations:
Your paper will be evaluated on the following seven (7) criteria:
Precision – Does the paper address the question(s) or task(s)?
Breadth – Is the full breadth of the subject, i.e., all the keys to the assignment, addressed?
Depth – Does the paper address all elements of the topic in sufficient depth? Does it include and apply the background readings and other background resources? Are they included as references?
Critical thinking – Are the concepts of the module applied accurately, logically, and relevantly?
Organization – Is the paper organized in a coherent and systematic manner? Are section headings included in all papers greater than 2 pages?
Clarity – Is the writing clear and the concepts articulated properly? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of response to the questions, or are thoughts conveyed through excessive use of quotations?
Referencing (citations and references) – Does the paper use proper APA style? Does the paper use citations and quotation marks where appropriate? Are all references listed in the bibliography used and referred to via citation?
