Celebrity Case Study and Presentation
Topic:Pancreatic Cancer – Steve Jobs (celebrity)
Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to provide the individual student with an opportunity to investigate and present information on a well-known person, historical figure, or celebrity that highlights current pathophysiology of a specific disease or condition.
Directions:
Prepare a paper on a disease or condition in a well-known person, historical figure, or modern day celebrity. Appropriate topics might be chosen from but are not limited to: Graves Disease and Missy Elliot, multiple sclerosis and Montel Williams, vitiligo or substance abuse Michael Jackson, acromegaly and Andre the Giant, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Stephen Hawking, diabetes and Paula Deen, lupus and Nick Cannon, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and Michael Phelps, TB and Emily and Charlotte Bronte, anemia and Venus Williams, testicular cancer and Lance Armstrong, Parkinson’s and Michael J. Fox, etc.
1. Describe in detail the subject of the presentation. Include a detailed description of the person including how/why they earned their notability. (4 points)
2. Describe the normal anatomy and physiology relevant to this condition. (4 points)
3. Describe the pathological changes that occur with the disease or condition. (4 points)
4. Describe the risk factors for this disease. Include any of the following as applicable: genetics, socio-economic status, geographical considerations, racial considerations, etc. (4 points)
5. Describe the clinical presentation for this disease. If information on the specific subject’s presentation is available please include. If no information on the subject’s specific clinical presentation is available, use hypothetical information that would be expected for the disease. This section should include presenting signs and symptoms that are expected for this disease. The discussion should also include hypothetical laboratory values and vital sign changes that are expected for the disease. If no abnormal values would be expected this must be stated. (4 points)
6. Describe the nursing priorities and interventions relevant to either this patient or to a patient with this disease. Include a description on current treatment modalities and rationale including medication management, psychosocial management (if applicable), diet or lifestyle modification (if applicable), etc. (4 points)
7. The paper must be creative and should creatively incorporate media such as images, videos, music, etc. into the presentation. Other forms of creativity are encouraged that keep the class engaged. (2 points)
8. Paper must include a minimum of 5 references such as required course text books, evidenced based articles (suggest Cinhal search), Standards of Care from appropriate professional organizations (e.g. AANP, AAFP, AAP, AAOS, CDC, consensus report), etc. (2 points)

Clinical presentation addresses relevant signs and symptoms that may be present in a person with this disease. Lab and vital sign changes are discussed. 4 pts.
Nursing priorities are clear, relevant, and comprehensive. Discussion of current treatment modalities is current, thorough, and correct and includes rationale. 4 pts.
Case study includes media or other sources of engaging materials. 3 pts.
Case study contains required references. 3 pts.
